CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: SAUGUS' WADE ON TRACK : AFTER A BREAK FROM RACING, CENTURIONS' ACE RETURNS.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Steve Wade Steve Wade (died 22nd December 1956) was one of the United Kingdom's executioners from 1940 to 1955. He died in Doncaster Royal Infirmary from carcinoma of the stomach.  is back, but it was hard to tell he was gone.

After helping the Saugus High boys' cross country team reach the State meet for the first time last year, Wade didn't run a step for the next eight months.

And he relished every moment of it. It was the first break from running for the Saugus senior since he began at age 9.

``It was an unknown aspect but it was nice, absolutely,'' Wade said.

With Wade back on the roads again this fall, he has been an integral component in Saugus' bid for a return visit to the State meet. The Centurions, who have been elevated from Division II to Division I this season, are fourth in the latest State rankings.

Saugus will get its biggest test of the season in the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. ``He is good and still good,'' said senior teammate Daniel Klawer, a former age-group competitor of Wade. ``It's up to him in his heart and his mind. He can be anywhere on this team he wants to be. He is going to be the sealer sealer,

whether we contend for the State championship.''

Wade's decision to stop running was virtually sealed at the start of last season when he first started thinking about a break. By the time the State meet rolled around in November, Wade had made up his mind to not run track in the spring.

``Somewhere along the way, I gradually moved more and more to deciding,'' Wade said. ``I plan on running a long time. It's part of my life. I had reached my potential. I wanted to come back my senior year and do something better.''

Saugus coach Pam Thompson, who also began running at an early age, was supportive of Wade's decision. Thompson, a Saugus High graduate who won the 1984 Southern Section 3-A Division 3,200-meter title as a senior, took two years off between seventh grade and high school after competing in youth track meets as a sprinter.

``It's pretty much a risk when you take a year off, but I understand what he was going through when you have run so many years of your life,'' Thompson said. ``In cross country, you have the team atmosphere to unite. In track, it's more individual. He would have been training against the best runners in CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing.  lifting weights instead of running during track season, ``bulking up'' 10 pounds to 152 pounds. The extent of running was limited to 800 meters twice a week with his body conditioning class. Since he resumed running, Wade has returned to his racing weight of 142.

``I knew he eventually had to take a break . . . he couldn't keep on running forever, but I expected it would have been after high school,'' senior Jacob Boeding said. ``He has more drive as a result of taking a break. He really wants to go out with a bang his senior year.''

Last year, Wade helped Saugus capture the Southern Section Division II and Foothill League titles - the first league and State titles since 1985. He was also the Centurions' No. 3 runner in the State meet, placing 32nd to lift Saugus to seventh in the Division II team competition.

Although still not in peak condition and making the transition to racing, Wade has been consistently in the Centurions' top five this season with fellow seniors Klawer and Boeding, junior Jon Mahar and sophomore Nick Zoetewey.

Two weeks ago in the Clovis Invitational, Wade ran 16 minutes, 47 seconds on the 5,000-meter course at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. ``It is tough getting back to running,'' Wade said. ``I am getting the feel for running and spreading my energy out during a race. I am looking forward to seeing improvement. Cross country is something that I am enjoying, it is different than last year.''
