``It'll be a nice day at the beach,'' Quartz Hill head coach Chip Morris said. ``We've been working so hard. It'll be fun to see how they do in the real world.''

The meet's races are divided by grade level. Some races in the popular season-opening meet can feature as many as 200 runners.

--Watch out: DyeStatCal.com recently released its state Division I watch list, which ranked the top runners in California's top division for the upcoming season.

Quartz Hill's Brieanna Morris was one of 12 honorable mentions. The state's top 10 runners were ranked, followed by the honorable mentions.

The site also came out with its girls' Southern Section team rankings. The city of Lancaster The City of Lancaster (2002 population: 133,914) is a local government district with city status in Lancashire, England. Its main town is Lancaster, from which it obtained its city status. Other towns in the district include Morecambe, Heysham, Slyne, and Carnforth.  has two schools in the Div. IV top 10. Paraclete is ranked No. 3, while Desert Christian is Christian I (krĭs`chən), 1426–81, king of Denmark (1448–81), Norway (1450–81), and Sweden (1457–64), count of Oldenburg, and founder of the Oldenburg dynasty of Danish kings.  No. 5.

This will be Desert Christian's first season in Southern Section Div. IV. At 503 students, Desert Christian is the division's smallest school. The cutoff to stay in Div. V is 499 students.

``We still just need to get out there and run,'' Desert Christian girls' cross country coach Dean Spoelstra said about the change. ``It's the same sport, we're just doing it against new teams.

``Now we'll just wave to the teams I've been talking about for the past 16 years, instead of compete with them. It was fun, but now we'll get to meet new teams and run against new colors.''

Spoelstra coached Desert Christian to the 1995 and 2001 Southern Section Div. V titles. It finished sixth at the 2004 Div. V state meet.

--Smooth transition: This will be Peter Blanton's first season as coach of the Palmdale High boys' cross country team. It's his first head coaching assignment. His only previous experience in the sport came during his senior year of high school, when he said he competed simply to stay in shape.

Blanton's short time at Palmdale has been made easier by a senior-laden roster. He hasn't set his starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

Blanton was hired on the last day of the 2004-05 school year. He didn't have to scramble to put together a summer workout Workout

``They know what it takes to be successful,'' Blanton said about his runners, who also give him input about their practice schedule.
