No. 5. This will be Desert Christian's first season in Southern Section Div. IV. At 503 students, Desert Christian is the division's smallest school. The cutoff to stay in Div. V is 499 students. ``We still just need to get out there and run,'' Desert Christian girls' cross country coach Dean Spoelstra said about the change. ``It's the same sport, we're just doing it against new teams. ``Now we'll just wave to the teams I've been talking about for the past 16 years, instead of compete with them. It was fun, but now we'll get to meet new teams and run against new colors.'' Spoelstra coached Desert Christian to the 1995 and 2001 Southern Section Div. V titles. It finished sixth at the 2004 Div. V state meet. --Smooth transition: This will be Peter Blanton's first season as coach of the Palmdale High boys' cross country team. It's his first head coaching assignment. His only previous experience in the sport came during his senior year of high school, when he said he competed simply to stay in shape.
