CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: MT. SAC RACE DOESN'T CLARIFY : VENTURA COUNTY EVENT COMING.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Mt.
Invitational on Saturday did little to clarify the picture.

That should change when Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Royal go head to head in the Ventura County Championships Friday at Lake Casitas Lake Casitas is a lake in Ventura County, California. It was formed by Casitas Dam on Coyote Creek, two miles (3 km) before it joins the Ventura River. Santa Ana Creek and North Fork Coyote Creek also flow into the lake. . If history is any indication, Thousand Oaks has the edge, having won last year and two of the past four years.

``It's been a tossup in league, but you kind of expect Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley to come through,'' Royal coach John Clarke John Clarke may be:
  • John Clarke (1609-1676), the co-founder of Rhode Island
  • John Clarke, the pseudonym adopted by Richard Cromwell after his abdication
  • John Clarke (dean of Salisbury) (1682-1757), dean of Salisbury Cathedral, mathematician, natural philosopher, and
said. ``The third spot is up for grabs.''

Both Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley posted narrow league dual-meet victories over Royal. At Mt. SAC, though, Royal was the team to beat. The Highlanders, buoyed by the surprising ninth-place of freshman Erin Weesner (18:45) over the hilly, 3-mile course, finished fourth in the individual sweepstakes race.

Royal's cumulative team time (1:41:14) for its five scoring runners was nearly two minutes faster than Simi Valley, which finished 11th in the team sweepstakes race.

The Highlanders' time might have been faster if Jaclyn Pedersen, who had been the Highlanders' No. 1 runner all season, had not been ill. The sophomore clocked 19:27 - 17 seconds slower than her Mt. SAC best as a freshman. Royal's No. 5 runner, Erica Nenkervis, is working her way back into shape after missing several weeks of training because of a sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn. .

On the other hand, Simi Valley wasn't at 100 percent either at Mt. SAC. Danielle Fernandes was nursing a groin pull. Amanda Soltis, battling stomach cramps, finished as the Pioneers' No. 6 runner in 108th.

Amanda Anderson Amanda Anderson is the head of the English department at Johns Hopkins University. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell University and taught at the University of Illinois before coming to Hopkins in 1999.  and Ashley Luna were 23rd and 31st for Simi Valley. Karen LeBlanc and Summer Tracey followed in 36th and 44th, and there was more than a 2-minute time gap to Simi Valley's fifth runner, Fernandes.

``Our top four ran an average race, not extraordinary, and our fifth fell off,'' Simi Valley coach Roger Evans
''This article discusses the London Assembly member for Havering and Redbridge. For the former Member of Parliament for Monmouth, see Roger Kenneth Evans.
(Jeremy) Roger Evans (b.
said. ``Our strength is our pack and we would have placed pretty much like we have if we back off on training.''

The Mt. SAC Invitational turned into a training run for Thousand Oaks, which competed in a late-entry race instead of the team sweepstakes.

Thousand Oaks had been hoping to face Simi Valley after losing twice to it earlier this season. It was Simi Valley's first consecutive victories over T.O. since 1991.

Thousand Oaks, which has had 12 different runners on its seven-member varsity this season because of injuries and illness, has found stability in the past few weeks, winning the large schools division race of the Clovis Invitational and going unbeaten in the remainder of its league dual meets.

At Mt. SAC, Thousand Oaks, buoyed by individual winner Kelley Hess in 19:28, won its heat with a 41-55 victory over San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928. Camp Pendleton, a large U.S. marine base, adjoins the city, which is chiefly residential. . Amanda Armstrong and Melissa McBain ran the race as a workout to pace freshman Julie Hancock.

``We were all fired up to run at Mt. SAC,'' Armstrong said. ``At first we were a little upset, but everything ended up working out.''

Thousand Oaks, however, dropped from third to seventh in the latest state Division I rankings released on Monday as a repercussion for its absence from the team sweepstakes. Radnoti has no second thoughts about a low-key effort at Mt. SAC with the Ventura County and Marmonte League meets only a week apart.

``We just wanted to get a feel for the course,'' Radnoti said. ``Our plan has been to run our best at CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  and hopefully at the state meet five weeks from now. A few kids had their heart set on running in the sweepstakes race, but they understood what our mission is.''
