CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: GJESDAL TOP FEMALE IN COC RACING SERIES.

Former Glendale College cross country runner Ana Gjesdal knew she could not waste time by looking back while running in Thursday's championship of the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  Summer Cross Country Series.

Gjesdal, 20, feared looking behind her because Glendale cross country coach Eddie Lopez, who also ran the three-mile course, was there all the time. The two had a dinner bet going.

Gjesdal, who will be running for University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. Over 50000 students are enrolled at the University of Michigan's three campuses. The students come from 50 states and over 100 foreign countries.  in the fall, maintained her ground and beat Lopez along with all the other female runners in the 230-runner race in 17:52 to take home the series' top-female trophy.

``I knew (Lopez) was there behind me all the time,'' said Gjesdal, who also took home a medal for winning the female 18-24 age division.

Lopez got a lot of credit from his former runners Thursday night.

Marco Arriaga, a former Glendale runner, credited his performance to Lopez. Arriaga finished the race in second place, but because he ran the required two races going into Thursday's series finale

He plans to perform in a 100-mile race from Angeles Crest Forrest to Pasadena that would likely take more than a day to complete.

The 55-year-old from Saugus also plans to run the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Marathon in November, which should gear him up for a 50K (31 miles) race in Ridgecrest in December and April's 50-mile race at Leona Valley.

--Siblings succeed: Victoria Perez, 10, and her brother David, 13, each finished their age divisions in first place and took home a medal to show for it.

``I feel good,'' Victoria said. ``I was nervous because I didn't think I'd get first place.''

David added: ``I feel real good. When I got to the end, I felt tired.''
