For Fleshman, the 1997 state Division I runner-up, the mark was an improvement of 36 seconds from her best run at Mt. SAC last year. ``For most seniors who have run as fast as she did last year, you're praying for a 20-second PR or maybe even a little bit faster,'' Canyon coach Dave DeLong said. ``I couldn't be happier.'' DeLong was similarly ecstatic with the Cowboys' team showing. Canyon, boosted by Fleshman and freshman Jazmin Treadway, finished a strong second to Hesperia Sultana 101-122. The Cowboys' team time of 1:38:31 was nearly 45 seconds faster than Sultana's for its five scoring runners - and third fastest of the meet. The Canyon boys are also on the rise with freshman Luke Llamas, a soccer player who led the Cowboys to a team victory in a Division I heat. Llamas finished fourth in 16:14 to move into 20th on the Mt. SAC freshman list. Llamas is the third Canyon runner among the top 25 freshmen along with Dave Hartman, who ran 16:01 in 1987, and Dale Kroege's 16:08 in 1981. It is a tradition Fleshman started as a member of the Cowboys' 1995 state Division I championship team as a memory of races - both good and bad. ``You have to build your season on the past,'' Fleshman said. ``You have to attribute what it takes when you win a race.'' Reality check: The Saugus boys finished fifth in the team sweepstakes race at Mt. SAC in their first major competition after being elevated from Division I to Division II this year. The Centurions, lifted by seniors Jacob Boeding and Dan Klawer who finished ninth and 19th, totaled 172 points. The Centurions finished only two points behind fourth-place Belmont and eight back of third-place Don Lugo. Long Beach Poly, the defending state champion, and Santee West Hills were first and second with 67 and 115 points. Klawer, the defending Foothill League champion, fell on a training run on Friday, suffering a large scrape on his knee, and wasn't sure if he could compete at Mt. SAC. Still, he led the field through the first mile in a brisk 4:39. ``We have plenty of room to improve,'' Klawer said. ``I don't think we were nervous enough. I want to go to state as a favorite, not as an underdog. Underdogs don't win a lot of the time. Favorites often do.'' Saugus had an average time of 16:13.1 at Mt. SAC, the Centurions went on to capture the Southern Section Division II title and advance to the state meet for the first time. ``Everybody was about 20 seconds off where they should have been,'' Boeding said about Saturday's race. ``That makes a pretty big difference when there are so many people in the race. This was the moment to see where we were. We were hoping top five, maybe top three on a good day. I feel pretty confident we'll be where we want to be.''
