CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: FAVORITES LOOSEN UP FOR FOOTHILL TITLE RACE : SAUGUS, CANYON HAVE EYES ON STATE.Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News The Saugus High boys' and the Canyon girls' cross country teams take their first step toward the state Division I championships in the Foothill League finals Thursday at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . Saugus and Canyon posted 10-0 records in the first two league meets to establish themselves as favorites to repeat as champions. Last year, Saugus swept the first three places en route to its first league title since 1985. A victory Thursday would give the Centurions, fifth in the state Division I rankings, their first back-to-back titles since 1984-85. Senior Dan Klawer is the defending league champion but should be challenged by senior teammate Jacob Boeding, who finished third in last year's meet. Hart senior Eric Peatman and Canyon freshman Luke Llamas will also have an impact. ``Whether Jacob or me wins league is not important,'' Klawer said. ``At this point, league is no concern. We're focusing on the state meet . . . not just making it there but doing well.'' The state meet is becoming a legitimate possibility for the Canyon girls after a strong showing at the Mt. SAC Invitational, posting the third-fastest team time. In the Foothill League finals, the Cowboys, powered by senior Lauren Fleshman, the 1997 state Division I runner-up, are seeking their seventh title in eight years. Canyon narrowly defeated Hart in the first Foothill League meet, 27-28. Canyon, however, romped to a comfortable victory in the second league meet with the emergence of freshmen Jazmin Treadway and Barrie Truex. At Mt. SAC, Fleshman, Treadway and Truex lifted Canyon to second in the team competition of the girls' individual sweepstakes race. Barry Truex has yet to miss one of his daughter's competitions. Ironically, Marci Mora didn't start running until Jameson starting running road races at age 5. Despite the close ties, neither Barrie or Jameson seem to mind the separation from their parents at Canyon. ``She is actually supportive of me running with the other groups,'' Barry Truex said of his daughter. ``High school is their thing and doing it her way. It's part of growing up and independence.'' Name game: Cecil and Rene Treadway fulfilled several objectives when they came up with the unorthodox spelling of their daughter Jazmin.
