``It was cool that we beat them, but we shouldn't underestimate them,'' Canyon sophomore Ryan Morgan said. ``If we underestimate them, that's not good because they are going to come back and hit us hard.''

Although the focus might be on Canyon and Poly, Sacramento Jesuit and McFarland could also contend for the team title. Last Saturday, Jesuit won the Division I title at the Stanford Invitational and McFarland, the defending state Division IV champion, posted the fastest team time in the Bell-Jeff Invitational.

Canyon took over the top spot from Long Beach Poly in the section rankings after its performance in the Great American Cross Country Festival. But both teams have room for improvement in the Clovis Invitational after sub-par performances from key runners.

Canyon junior Mark Bingham Mark Kendall Bingham (May 22, 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA– September 11, 2001 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, USA) was an American public relations executive who founded his own company, the Bingham Group.  and sophomore Jace Getskow, members of the Cowboys' state Division II runner-up team last season, finished as the Cowboys' sixth and seventh runners.

For Poly, seniors Bryan Durham and Oscar Mendez, the Jackrabbits' top two runners, had difficulties. Durham was the Jackrabbits' No. 4 runner. Mendez has been hampered by shin splints Shin Splints Definition

``Poly has some incredible and awesome guys,'' Llamas said. ``Every meet is a different thing.''

 during double-workout days.

Mora typically runs a mile to Llamas' house to meet his teammate. The two do a loop that passes by Mora's residence. Then Llamas runs the final mile back to his home alone.

The direction of the loop does not figure to change because of Llamas' difficulty in waking up early. Mora usually has to go to Llamas' room and shake him to wake up.

``I'm usually half awake when he comes by,'' Llamas said.

The arrangement is fine by Llamas, who isn't ready to take on the responsibility of meeting at Mora's house.

``I'd be waiting for him at 7 in the morning and I'd probably be waiting and waiting until 9 and wonder, 'Where is he?,' '' Mora said.

--Thompson honored: Former Saugus cross country and track coach Pam Thompson has been inducted into the school's hall of fame.

Thompson won the Southern Section 3-A Division 3,200-meter title and holds Saugus' school record in the event at 10:35.80. She coached the Saugus boys' cross country team to the 1997 Southern Section Division II title and to third in the 1998 state Division II championships.
