CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: CANYON FACES TOUGH TUNEUPS.


The state and Southern Section Division I titles are the main objectives for the Canyon High boys. The Cowboys' biggest test will come in the Race of Champions Great American Cross Country Festival in Charlotte, N.C.

The race is expected to include seven of Harrier harrier, breed of dog

--Home alone: Canyon assistant Cal Linam will accompany the boys' team to the Great American Cross Country Festival. Head coach Dave DeLong said he wanted to Linam to attend as a reward for his work in setting up the trip and that he was concerned about missing class time as an instructor.

``My job is as a teacher first,'' DeLong said. ``I'm sure the team will do fine without me. The only difference will be I'll be giving them a pat on the back 24 hours later instead of after the race.''

--Run around: The first Foothill League meet will be Tuesday at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. --Miller time: Hart junior Phaedra Miller competed in four races within eight days last week and seemed only to get stronger as the races wore on.

She was Hart's No. 2 runner in a time trial Sept. 8 and a dual meet on Wednesday against South Pasadena South Pasadena (păs'ədē`nə), city (1990 pop. 23,936), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1888. Last Saturday, she finished fourth in the large-schools division of the Ojai Invitational, where she was the first 11th-grade finisher and Hart's top finisher.
