CROSS COUNTRY FINALS: DESERT CHRISTIAN LOOKS STRONG : TEAMS HAVE EXCELLENT SHOTS AT STATE BERTHS.

Similar performances by the Desert Christian High boys' and girls' cross country teams in the Southern Section Division V finals at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Mt.
 will likely land the Knights berths in the state meet.

For the Desert Christian boys, it might also lead to a Southern Section title.

The Knights, led by senior Zach Schroeder and junior Dan Miller, posted a season-best 1:25:52 en route to its heat victory to emerge as a contender to defending section and state champion Flintridge Prep.

Flintridge Prep won its heat with a team time of 1:27:09, more than a minute slower than Desert Christian, but will be slightly favored with its division-leading time of 1:25:34 at Mt. SAC this season.

 Chadwick and first-year school Northwood, which boasts three runners from Irvine's state Division I champion team, are a lock for the first two spots.

Desert Christian, Maranatha and Bermuda Dunes Desert Christian appear the only schools with a realistic shot at finishing among the top four.

Sophomore Jennifer Wright, senior Pam McClaren and junior Deann Matteson led Desert Christian in the preliminaries to a comfortable heat victory with three runners among the top six. Junior Bethany Spoelstra, the niece of coach Dean Spoelstra and sophomore Joselyn Wall, completed the scoring with top-20 finishes.

 advanced to the finals in Division IV. The Spirit boys, led by the trio of senior Chris Covert, the son of Antelope Valley coach Mark Covert, along with freshman Joe Iaccino and senior Chris Wehan grabbed the sixth and final qualifying spot in its heat.

Sole survivor: Highland sophomore Cassie Ramirez was the lone Golden League runner to advance to the finals. Ramirez, a surprise winner in the Golden League finals, posted a lifetime best 19:17 to advance as an individual with a third-place finish in her heat.
