Cementing his status as one of the finest runners in the nation, Matusak made up ground late in San Diego, overtaking nine runners in the final 800 meters. His talents will be put to use next year at California. Matusak's other accomplishments this season included a fourth consecutive Mission League title, the fastest time of the day in his Div. She had the area's best time (17:38) of the day at the Mt. SAC Invitational. But she had a cold late in the season and might not have been in top form for the Southern Section Div. I finals, where she placed in the top 20 but out of contention for an individual spot in the state meet. She finished 22nd at the West Regional. BRIENNA MORRIS, Quartz Hill, So. For much of the season, Morris ran in the shadow of Highland's Alyssa Craft, but she had a gritty performance in the Golden League finals. Morris beat Craft for the first time, in the last regular-season race, to retain her individual title. ANNA FARIAS-EISNER, Harvard-Westlake, Sr. She skipped her sophomore and junior years so she would be healthy for track season. But a look at her performances this season suggested the layoff didn't hurt. Farias-Eisner finished first in the Southern Section Div. III finals and helped her team place 14th at the state meet. JENNIFER HERNANDEZ, Birmingham, So. Coach Scott King Scott Glenndale Martin King (born June 25, 1967 in Thunder Bay, Ontario) was a professional ice hockey goaltender. Hernandez gave Hartel her stiffest competition for the Patriots' West Valley League meets. With that combination, Birmingham was almost certain to finish near the top in most of its races. CAITLIN FITZGERALD, Highland, So. As late as a month into the season. Fitzgerald talked about wanting to break the 19-minute barrier. She bettered that by nearly half a minute, running 18:29 over the 2.91-mile course in the Southern Section prelims at Mt. SAC. She finished 11th in her heat and although the time would've qualified her for the finals in any other race, it wasn't enough at the premier meet. EMMALINE HARTEL, Birmingham, Jr. Hartel has the rare ability to seemingly will herself to the finish she wants. GUZMAN, Monroe, Jr. Guzman had the fastest performance at Pierce College, site of the City Section championships, a remarkable three times this season. His 15:45 in a midseason race did it the first time, a 15:39 run at the preliminaries bested that, and he then ran 15:30 at the City finals to win the section title. TED PRICE, Camarillo, Jr. Price turned in what is becoming a routine season. He was consistently in the top 10, regardless of competition. JAEDTKE, Royal, Sr. Rarely does a lead runner feel the pressure that Jaedtke did this season as the anchor of the state's top-ranked team. But Jaedtke, who is bound for Long Beach State, set the pace for his team all season. His seventh-place finish led Royal to its first state title - 65 points ahead of second-place Dana Hills. MICHAEL CYBULSKI, Royal, So. Cybulski's time of 15 minutes, 52 seconds at the state championships in Fresno was the fastest of any underclassman. At the start of the season, he was just hoping to make the varsity. The team's No. 2 runner steadily climbed the depth chart, consistently showing he could turn it up for big races. Look for him at the front of the Royal pack next year. The Antelope Valley , Sr. The Antelope Valley area's top runner finished first in the Golden League for the third consecutive year, a streak that was even sweeter because this season his individual title was accompanied by a team championship, the Antelopes' first since the late 1980s. MATT MILLER, Loyola, Sr. Although Matusak topped Loyola's roster, it couldn't have won a second state title in four years without Miller. Loyola's No. 2 runner was never far behind Matusak, finishing seventh (15:41) at the state meet. TOM MCLEAN Tom McLean is a veteran of both the Parachute Regiment and the SAS and is a survival expert who lived on the island of Rockall from 26 May to 4 July 1985 to affirm Britain's claim to the island. , Flintridge Prep, Sr. McLean won a section title two years ago as a sophomore and was determined to do it again in his final season. ``It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Just more than a month later, Flintridge Prep defeated rival Woodcrest Christian of Riverside in the Div. V race at the state championships in Fresno. COACH OF THE YEAR RYAN LUCE, Royal Luce couldn't stop the lump from forming in his throat after the Highlanders accepted the Southern Section Div. I trophy, in one of his team's closest races of the season. Luce coached Royal to a near-perfect season, winning the Southern Section and state titles, before finishing fourth in the nation at the inaugural Nike Team Nationals in Portland, Ore. Newcomer of the Year ALYSSA CRAFT, Highland, Jr. Craft was so new at winning that she didn't have a strategy - except running in front - for much of her successful season. Craft first posted notice at the Seaside Invitational, lowering her personal best by nearly a minute and winning by the same margin. The junior stayed at the head of the pack - surviving a wrong turn in a Golden League meet and recording a photo-finish in the team sweeps race at Mt. SAC - long enough to merit consideration as one of the favorites at the state meet. But an off day in her Div. I finals heat kept Craft from a state berth. But she rebounded at the Foot Locker West Regional, finishing in the top 20.
