Hart has been strengthened by freshmen Whitney Russell Whitney Russell Harris-Crane was a fictional character on the NBC soap opera Passions. Her birth year is 1982. She was played by Brook Kerr since the series' debut in July 1999 and last aired in September 2007 when Whitney moved to New Orleans.  and Phaedra Miller, age-group track standouts who have been the Indians' top two runners this fall. Hart also returns junior Whitney Phillips, the Indians' No. 1 runner the past two seasons.

`` Hart should beat us. They are a good team with pure, raw talent,'' DeLong said. ``I am not trying to make us look better than we are. The last few years have been nice but I knew it had to dry up sooner or later.

However, DeLong, said it is too early to rule out Canyon for a shot at its eighth league title in nine seasons.

Sophomore Jazmin Treadway was the Foothill League runner-up and is the league's top returner. Senior Kristin Cooper and sophomore Barrie Truex were members of the 1998 team, which was ninth in the Southern Section Division I finals. Freshman Brenda Stevens has shown promise.

``All I ask is that we work hard,'' DeLong said. ``If we don't win, it won't be because we were outworked. What else can we do? We still might win but we're not the favorites. In other years, I thought we were the best team going in but I don't believe it now.''

Hart started the season off impressively in the large-schools race of the Ojai Invitational with Russell and Miller finishing third and fifth. The performance moved the Indians into the ninth in the Southern Section Division I rankings.

Hart, however, dropped out of the latest rankings after finishing sixth in the Division I race at the Bell-Jeff Invitational at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America.  on Saturday. The Indians were without Phillips and junior Jamie Orlich, who were held out as a precaution because of minor injuries.

However, being the top team today will be most important when Hart and Canyon square off in the first Foothill League meet at Griffith Park. Today's meet, along with the second meet Oct. 14 at Lake Castaic will count 25 percent toward the final standings. The league championships Nov. 14 counts 50 percent.

Saugus was fourth in the Foothill League standings last season but is much improved with the sister combination of senior Lindsay O'Neill and junior Christina. Senior Suzanne Sage and juniors Jen Liff and Emily Erickson also return.

Burbank, which won the Division II race at the Bell-Jeff Invitational, has two front-runners in Erica McCarthy and Sarah Wear.

The Saugus boys are the two-time defending champions but will receive a strong challenge from much-improved Burroughs. Senior Jon Mahar and juniors Nick Zoetewey and Scott Axline are back for Saugus, which finished third in the 1998 State Division I championships.

Burroughs, however, turned in impressive performances in the Seaside Invitational, posting the fourth-fastest team time, and to win the Division II race at the Bell-Jeff Invitational and its first team title in the 26-year history of the meet. Burroughs was unranked to start the season but has moved into third in the latest section Division III
