CROSS COUNTRY : NEIPP POSTS BEST TIME HIGHLAND SENIOR PRIMED TO CHASE TITLE.

Highland High School's Andrea Neipp, taking advantage of cool running conditions on Saturday, showed that she is primed to challenge for a Southern Section cross country title.

Neipp dominated her Division II heat during the Southern Section preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Mt.
 in Walnut, winning the race by 37 seconds while also posting the day's fastest time.

The senior, who was third in Division I at last year's State Championships, cruised from start to finish, covering the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 45 seconds.

Hoover's David Lopez and Burbank's Tim Leahy were the top local boys' performers.

Lopez easily won his heat in 15:29, outdistancing runner-up Luis Estrada of Santa Ana Valley The Santa Ana Valley is located in Orange County, California and is bisected by the Santa Ana River. The valley is home to most of Orange County’s central business districts. , who finished in 15:47.

Behind Lopez's effort, the Tornadoes were able take third in their heat to qualify for next week's finals at Mt. SAC.

Lopez was followed closely by teammates Isabel Casillas (fourth, 15:59) and Jamal Balouch (sixth, 16:08). Camarillo's Rey Coronado (seventh, 16:11) also qualified individually for next week's finals.

Leahy turned in the second fastest boys' time of the day, winning his Division II heat in 15:27.

The top four teams in each heat plus the fifth-place team with the fastest team time advanced Saturday to next week's finals.

Other individual heat winners on Saturday included Quartz Hill's Danielle Day (Division I, 18:35), Brad Hegemier of L.A. Baptist (Division V, 16:22) and Flintridge's Doug Hall Doug Hall is an inventor most known for his appearance on the ABC television series American Inventor.

Doug began his inventing career at age 12, inventing and selling a line of magic and juggling kits.
 (Division V, 16:28).

In the girls' portion of the meet, Louisville, La Canada, Canyon and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.  (18:19) and Kim Garnil (18:34), won its Division IV heat to set up a three-way battle next week with Nordhoff, the other heat winner.

With sophomore Amanda Armstrong taking an impressive individual victory in 18:36, Thousand Oaks was able to finish second in its Division I heat. The Lancers lanc·er

Canyon, the defending Southern Section and State Division I champion, finished second to qualify for the Division II finals.

The Cowboys are competing in Division II this year after the Southern Section realigned its teams before the season.

Lauren Fleshman led Canyon, finishing second in 18:15, followed by teammates Julie Harris Julie Harris (born December 2, 1925) is a distinguished American stage, screen, and television actress. She has won five Tony Awards and three Emmy Awards, and was nominated for an Academy Award. She is a member of the American Theatre Hall of Fame.  (fifth, 18:52), Erin White (13th, 20:11) and Jean Drummond (15th, 20:18).
