CROSS COUNTRY : IT HAS BEEN THE BEST OF TIMES FOR N.H.'S MUITE.

Byline: Danny Schumacher Daily News Staff Writer

After a year of persuasion, North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  cross country coach Gary Smith Gary Smith may refer to:
  • Gary Smith (Realtor Albuquerque NM)
  • Gary Smith (CEO of Ciena corporation)
  • Gary Smith (Irish Bassist)
  • Gary Smith (singer with Emencity)
  • Gary Smith (sportswriter)
  • Gary Smith (record producer)
  • Gary Smith (guitarist)
finally convinced Paul Muite to just run.

Muite ran cross country part time because he wanted to play basketball. He didn't play much and rarely got in games. The lack of training was preventing Muite from reaching his full potential as a runner. Smith felt Muite had a gift for the sport.

``It was just a matter of convincing him that he was a runner,'' Smith said.

It turned out Smith was right. After finally giving up basketball to focus on cross country during his senior year, Muite has blossomed into a City Section title contender.

He will compete for the title during Saturday's 10 a.m. City Section finals at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics
Pierce College offers associate's degrees, mainly in the arts and sciences. There are also certificate programs in early childhood education, social services, dental hygienist, and others.
and goes into Saturday's race as a slight favorite after turning in the fastest qualifying time in a heat victory during last week's preliminaries.

``He's been peaking at the right time,'' Smith said. ``He's been untapped because he's never been in shape. (Last year) I would work him out during my conference period. He just couldn't get enough work.''

Also on Saturday is the Southern Section championships at Mount San Antonio Mount San Antonio, better known to most in Los Angeles as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California, USA and the highest point in Los Angeles County. Mount San Antonio has two summits.  College in Walnut. Hoover's David Lopez is one of the favorites to win the Division I title. Highland's Andrea Neipp has the fastest qualifying time in Division II girls. Contenders for girls' team title include Canyon and Louisville.

Evidence displayed over the past few weeks seems to point out that Muite, who moved with his family to the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  from Kenya when he was 7 years old, is holding the hot hand among the other top runners.

After all, he's getting in good running shape for the first time in his life, as shown by the large chunks he has knocked off his personal best times over the past few races. Last week he covered the 3.0-mile Pierce College course in 15 minutes, 14 seconds.

``He barely broke 16 (last year),'' Smith said.

Monroe's Ali BenMohamed and Belmont's Manuel Lopez both are expected to be Muite's primary competition on Saturday.

Lopez finished second last year and is a very tough competitor. He also led Belmont to the City championship game in soccer, earning player of the year honors as a goalkeeper.

BenMohamed, winner of the City Section 1,600-meter run title this spring, is gifted with a powerful finishing kick. But his performance over the final weeks of last season was disappointing and he turned in a non-impressive effort in winning his heat last week.

Going into Saturday's race Muite would appear to be the sharpest competitor. He beat Lopez last week, one of the few occasions he has taken command of a race. But maybe that is just a sign he is finally getting fully comfortable on the course.

``He's been impressive this season,'' Birmingham coach Scott King Scott Glenndale Martin King (born June 25, 1967 in Thunder Bay, Ontario) was a professional ice hockey goaltender. He played in only two National Hockey League games for the Detroit Red Wings, but is known for his great play for the Toledo Storm.  said. ``(But) last week was the first race I've seen him go after it from the start. That really seemed to make a difference. He's never had the attitude of a front runner front runner nfavorito/a
