The disappointment from last year's poor finish at the City Section cross country finals still evident, Monroe High School's Ali BenMohamed is focused on just one important race and the chance to make up for an opportunity lost. That was clear during Thursday's City Section cross country preliminaries at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Other heat winners on Thursday included North Hollywood's Paul Muite, Kennedy's Bree Akesson and Cleveland's Jaime Jones. The top five teams and the top five individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to next week's City finals. BenMohamed, who won the City Section 1,600-meter title last spring, was hardly pushed in his race Thursday, covering the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 34 seconds. Akesson, a transfer from Alemany who is unbeaten against City Section competition this season, held off Birmingham sophomore Tiffany Tiffany, Tiffanie (UK) a semi-longhaired version of the Burmese cat.
