in 1997 by capturing her school's first individual City Section championship. Stein, now a senior, hopes to end her high school career in a similar manner.

After finishing second in the City finals as a sophomore and junior, Stein has emerged as a strong favorite for this year's section after a string of impressive early-season performances.

Stein won the girls' Division I race at the Bell-Jeff Invitational at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. The park covers 4,210 acres (17 km²) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America.  on Saturday in a course-record 16:31.

The performance dipped under the 1980 mark of 16:32, set by Chaminade of West Hills' Tania

Fischer, for the 2.9-mile course. Stein's record was nearly two minutes faster than runner-up Heather Rosas of San Pedro (18:30) and 1:29 faster than her winning time of 18:00 in the Division II race in the 1999 Bell-Jeff meet.

``I was trying to get a good time. I was not thinking about the record,'' Stein said. ``I just wanted to do better than last year.''

North Hollywood, buoyed by Stein and the 14th-place finish of senior Anielkha Tijerano, finished third in the team standings with 89 points. Belmont won with 29 points, followed by defending City Section champion San Pedro with 57.

It was Stein, however, who provided the meet's brightest highlight. Stein ran unchallenged over the course, which traverses primarily through horse trails above the Greek Theatre. The effort came two days after setting a personal best of 17:50 on the 3-mile course at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics

Stein opened the season with a victory Sept. 8 in the Division I race of the Woodbridge Invitational in Irvine.

``There is always somebody out there, you never know,'' North Hollywood coach Gary Smith said, referring to the City Section finals. ``But I think today is going to be a tremendous confidence builder.''
