CROSS COUNTRY: SIRAKI SAVES IT FOR LATER.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

WALNUT - Anita Siraki's natural instinct was to challenge Wyoming's Alicia Craig with a mile to go in the girls' seeded race of the Foot Locker Foot Locker, Inc.  to a 15-second victory over Siraki in the matchup between the top returners from the 1999 national championship.

``I had to save it,'' Siraki said. ``It was not that I did not care. There was as no point in trying to win.''

Craig covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 36 seconds to capture her second regional title in a row. Siraki was second in 17:51 with four-time state champion Sara Bei of Santa Rosa Santa Rosa, city, Argentina

Seniors Mark Nevers of Oak Park and Tom Kubler of Viewpoint were 11th in 15:51 and 30th in 16:16, respectively.

Craig and Siraki, the two-time state Division I champion, were projected as the top girls' runners after finishing third and fourth in the 1999 nationals. They held true to form Saturday.

They were part of a large pack through the first mile but broke free from the field coming down the switchbacks shortly before 2 miles. The Stanford-bound Craig opened a small lead at the crest of Poop-Out Hill before the previously undefeated Siraki settled for second after a brief debate.

``I was hearing two things,'' Siraki said. `` `Go get her, Anita. Go get her, Anita.' A group of people a little past that were saying save it for next week. She was regional champ last year and was running awesome. I decided to save it.''

Stein, who was 22nd in the 1999 West Regional, needed to give her all to earn her first national-championship berth. She was in ninth with 600 meters to go before passing Loretta Kilmer of Ramona High to move into the top eight.

``Everybody is so fast. The competition is so good that I did not know what to think,'' Stein said. ``I thought that I if I was really lucky, I might be able to go (to nationals).''

Many projected Kubler as a good bet to advance to the national championships as the top returner after a 12th-place finish in the 1999 meet. Kubler, however, faded badly after getting sucked out during a brisk Brisk as a proper name may refer to:
