CROSS COUNTRY: SAUGUS' EFFORT IS LETTER PERFECT : COACH'S MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGES HELP SENIORS MOVE ON TO STATE.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Saugus High cross country coach Pam Thompson issued a challenge to her team prior to the Southern Section Division I championships at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. . The Centurions responded with their best effort of the season to earn a berth in the state Division I finals Saturday at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. It is open to the public daily.  in Fresno.

Thompson wrote letters to the team's seniors for motivation after a disappointing performance in the preliminaries. The tactic apparently did the trick.

Four of the five Centurions' scoring runners turned in personal-best efforts. Dan Klawer knocked 27 seconds from his best to finish sixth in 15:27. Jacob Boeding was 16th in 15:41, only a second off his career best, set in the Mt. SAC Sac: see Sac and Fox.

Klawer and Boeding have been a potent 1-2 punch for Saugus all season, but perhaps the biggest factor in the Centurions' turnaround was the team's third, fourth and fifth runners, sophomore Nick Zoetewey, junior Jon Mahar and senior Steve Wade Steve Wade (died 22nd December 1956) was one of the United Kingdom's executioners from 1940 to 1955. He died in Doncaster Royal Infirmary from carcinoma of the stomach. .

Zoetewey timed 15:56 to finish 24th and knock 40 seconds off his mark from the preliminaries. Mahar sliced 35 seconds off to finish 33rd in 16:12 and Wade, who was suffering from the flu in the preliminaries, took off a whopping 1:41. In all, the Centurions' team time of 1:19:30 was more than three minutes "Three Minutes" is the 46th episode of Lost. It is the twenty-second episode of the second season. . Long Beach Poly won with 72 to win its third consecutive title.

For Wade, Saturday's performance culminated his return to cross country after taking more than six months off running after the 1997 season. Thompson questioned Wade's reasons for returning to cross country. Wade, who embraced Thompson after Saturday's race in gratitude, said the letter played a big role in his breakthrough.

``I never really thought about it until then,'' Wade said. ``I guess the real reason I came back was to be here with these guys again in the state meet. I have to say that was on my mind a lot during the race.''

Klawer also had a lot to contemplate. Thompson urged the two-time Foothill League champion to be happy with what he had already accomplished but not to limit himself. Klawer was also motivated by a practical joke played by Saugus classmates Classmates can refer to either:

The two seniors posted a message on a local newspaper's Internet page claiming Klawer had given the Foothill League a bad name with his performance in the Southern Section preliminaries. A fictitious Based upon a fabrication or pretense.

Valencia High sophomore signed the note. Barton and Mackey followed it with a message of inspiration: ``Don't bag on the man. Dan is the man.''

``I am glad it was a joke, but it made me realize how much I wanted it,'' Klawer said.

For Boeding, Thompson, who won the 1984 Southern Section 3-A Division 3,200-meter title at Saugus, shared her experiences as a competitive runner in her message to Boeding.

``He is the toughest one to coach,'' Thompson said. ``I see a lot of similarities. A lot of us have some gifts we are blessed with and take them for granted. He is the key person and when he decides he is ready, the only thing which holds him back is him.''

Saugus will be hoping to continue their momentum from the Southern Section championships into the state meet. It will be the first appearance at the Division I level for the Centurions, who were elevated from Division II this season.

Defending state champion Long Beach Poly is favored, but Saugus, Santa Ana and Don Lugo as well as West Hills of Santee and City Section champion Belmont could all take over the top spot if Poly falters.

``If every guy gives their total best, anybody is beatable on a given day,'' Klawer said. ``It is just a matter of how bad everybody individually wants to run. It is such a team sport that if one guy doesn't want to do it, it's over. But if everybody runs to their potential, I truly believe it is going to be awesome.''

Return to glory: The state junior college meet at Woodward Park in Fresno last Saturday was the latest chapter in the return of Julie Harris Julie Harris (born December 2, 1925) is a distinguished American stage, screen, and television actress.
