CROSS COUNTRY: RUNNERS IN CHASE FOR TITLES.

Oak Park High was denied a berth in the 2000 state Division IV cross country finals after finishing sixth in the Southern Section championships - four points from the fourth and final qualifying spot.

The Eagles can make up for the disappointment with a state title today at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. It is open to the public daily.  in Fresno. Oak Park, led by sophomore Lauren Morales, is favored for the championship after running to the school's first Southern Section title last Saturday.

Sophomore Blossom Marimpetri and freshman Tatiana Camacho, both first-year runners, have complemented returnees Morales, Ali Banks, Kelly Yahr, Kristina Skiba and Lisa Niebergall.

The Division IV girls' 5,000-meter race, the first of 10 division championship, will be a rematch of the section final between Oak Park and Orange Lutheran in which the teams were separated by two points. North Coast Section champion Piedmont and Central Section champion McFarland are other contenders. Sophomore Lindsay Flacks of Harvard-Westlake of Studio City is among the favorites to win the individual title.

In the Division IV competition, Oak Park's boys will be pressed to challenge eight-time champion McFarland, the seventh-ranked team in the nation. The Eagles, however, appear well capable of repeating their runner-up finish Noun 1. runner-up finish - a finish in second place (as in a race)

A national title could be on the line for the Canyon boys in Division I. Westlake, paced by Ventura County champion Ashley Jones, and Caren Sperry-led Simi Valley are at-large qualifiers in Division II.

Southern Section Division V girls' champion Desert Christian of Lancaster is poised for its highest finish in the state championships after finishing third for the second time in three years last year and fourth in 1999.

The Knights are among the title favorites with University of San Francisco     [  and Chadwick with senior Jynnifer Wright, junior Claytonia Tarazi and sophomore Amy Spoelstra.

In Division III, La Canada upset Corona del Mar by three points in the Southern Section final to qualify for the state championships for the fifth consecutive year behind fourth-year runners Emily Farr and Carina Carina (kərē`nə) [Lat.,=the keel], southern constellation, representing the keel of the ancient constellation Argo Navis, or Ship of the Argonauts. Carina contains Canopus, the second brightest star in the sky.  Garnic.
