Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

WALNUT - There were no one-point losses this year, no reason for the Highland High of Palmdale girls' cross country team to leave Saturday's Southern Section preliminaries at Mt. A year after being edged out of advancing to the Southern Section Div. I finals by a single point, Highland exacted its revenge. Sophomore Alyssa Craft took fourth and the Bulldogs claimed the fourth and final qualifying spot out of their heat.

``I guess our hard work paid off,'' said junior Shannon Vastine, one of three holdovers from last year's team. ``We sort of expected it, but now that we have it, it's just great.''

The Highland girls advanced to next Saturday's finals for the first time since 1996 - and did so with a team featuring no seniors. Their counterparts on the boys' team, meanwhile, qualified for the first time in their history, also taking the fourth spot out of their heat.

Senior Andres Aguinaga took fourth in the boys' race in 15 minutes, 42 seconds and was the Bulldogs' top finisher. Highland qualified over Marina of Huntington Beach Huntington Beach, city (1990 pop. 181,519), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast, across from Santa Catalina Island, in an oil-producing area; inc. 1909. Thousand Oaks also beat Marmonte League rival Royal for the second consecutive week.

The biggest surprise were the Saugus girls, who qualified in Div. I on the strength of freshman Shannon Murakami's second-place finish in 17:56. Murakami ran only nine seconds behind Murrieta Valley star senior Liza Pasciuto.
