Although no team scores were kept, Oak Park would have defeated Nordhoff on both team and dual-meet scoring in the small-schools race. Nordhoff, however, was without one its top five runners and typically peaks toward the Southern Section and state championships in November. ``From the get-go, we knew we could be pretty competitive,'' Oak Park senior Erik Wackenstedt said. ``A lot of us are looking forward to Nordhoff. I think racing them will improve times on both sides.'' The 5:35 p.m. race figures to be much more than just a dual meet between Oak Park and Nordhoff, the State's Nos. 3 and 5 teams. Learning to get through all these meets with mental toughness will be fundamental to our success.'' So will junior Mark Nevers. Nevers, who will be among the favorites for the individual title at Mt. SAC, has posted victories in the Ojai, Stanford, and Oak Park invitationals this season. Nevers said competing in big meets week after week has been draining but said the experience of racing at Mt. SAC, the site of the Southern Section championships, will pay dividends in November ``It would be nice to take a week off, but I think you can only become the best when you race against the best,'' Nevers said.'' Wackenstedt and juniors Mark Nevers and Ben Saxey have been a solid top three for Oak Park. Sophomore Chase Ferrell has been a surprise No. 4 runner for the Eagles.
