CROSS COUNTRY: IMPRESSIVE CANYON RUNS AWAY WITH TIME RECORD AT MT. SAC MEET.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

WALNUT - The Canyon High boys' cross country team put itself in a class of its own in the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

The Cowboys broke the meet's team-time record in dominating the marquee team sweepstakes race in the nation's largest high school meet.

In team scoring, Canyon posted a runaway victory over Long Beach Poly 83-125 in a battle of the state's top Division I teams. It was the Cowboys' third victory over the defending state champions and nation's preseason No. 1 team.

``We were more focused on running a good time rather than beating (Long Beach Poly),'' Llamas said. ``If we ran a good time, the place - first, second or third - would come. It was a race against the clock.''

All five of Canyon's scoring runners clocked personal bests on the challenging 2.95-mile course. Llamas ran 14:55 in finishing eight seconds behind Clovis West senior Kevin Davis Kevin Davis may refer to:

Mora and Morgan ran 15:01 and 15:11, respectively. The biggest improvement came from junior Troy Werner, who knocked 1:13 off his previous Mt. SAC best to finish 17th in 15:41. Sophomore Alex Harris rounded out the Cowboys' scoring in 55th.

Canyon placed three runners ahead of Long Beach Poly's No. 1 runner in dismantling a field that included six of the state's top 10 Division I teams. The victory put Canyon in the forefront to end the Jackrabbits' string of an unprecedented five section titles.

``Beating Poly for the third time is excellent,'' Morgan said. ``But on the other hand once Mendez comes back it is going to be a different story. So we still can't be too confident about it.''
