According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  last Thursday.

The Cowboys, though, had plenty of incentive to defeat rival Hart High.

``They ruin everything by winning league in everything,'' Canyon's Lauren Fleshman said. ``We're the only fall sport to consistently beat them. There was a lot of expectations and pressure to beat Hart. We wanted to leave no doubt that we were the best team in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. .''

Fleshman and Canyon lived up to those expectations. Fleshman, won her third title in a row in 19:56 over the hilly, 3-mile course to lead a 1-2 Cowboys finish along with freshman Jazmin Treadway (20:08).

Canyon placed five runners among the top 10 for a 27-43 triumph over Hart. Sophomore Whitney Phillips finished third for Hart, which came within a point of upsetting Canyon in the first Foothill League meet. Janetta Iwanicki and Jamie Orlich also posted top 10 finishes in seventh and ninth for the Indians.

The top three teams in the Foothill League finals qualified for Saturday's Southern Section preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. In the Mt. SAC Invitational Oct. 24, Fleshman timed 17:19 to become the eighth-fastest performer on the revered course's all-time list. Fleshman, the 1997 state and Southern Section Division I runner-up, however, doesn't figure to approach that mark in the preliminaries.

``I want to take it as easy as possible,'' Fleshman said. ``I'll try to do what it takes to win, but I am saving the big stuff for the big races.''

All for one: The Saugus boys, 1997 Southern Section Division II champions, are not planning to hold anything back in the Southern Section preliminaries after being elevated from Division II to Division I this fall.

The Centurions, fifth in the state Division I rankings, are tapering for the meet and will take Thursday off to rest completely for the preliminaries. Saugus' prospects figure to weigh heavily on the time gap between the Centurions No. 1 and 2 runners Daniel Klawer and Jacob Boeding and Nick Zoetewey, Jon Mahar and Steve Wade Steve Wade (died 22nd December 1956) was one of the United Kingdom's executioners from 1940 to 1955. ``We're going to have an excellent result if they can be 10 to 20 seconds behind us,'' Klawer said. ``If we can do that, we'll be an awesome challenger.''

Saugus, boosted by the 1-2 finish of Klawer and Boeding, tuned up for Saturday's preliminaries with a runaway victory in the Foothill League finals. Klawer defended his league title in 16:12 for a five-second victory over Boeding. Zoetewey, Mahar and Wade were fourth, seventh and 10th for the Centurions, who posted a 24-58 triumph over Canyon for its first back-to-back league titles since 1985.

``We all knew we had to work after last year's result and moving up,'' Klawer said. ``I think this just shows we still have quite a crew left here.''

``We're really excited to be back and end the drought,'' Hart coach Larry David said. ``The last two years was not a matter of not having the talent but having five guys put it together at the same time.''
