The Glendale College duo, however, rebounded to post victories in the Western State Conference finals at Cuesta/Fairbanks Run Park on Thursday, lifting the Vaqueros to a sweep of the men's and women's team titles.

Harris, battling a sinus infection, ran a course-record 18:59 over the women's 5,000-meter course to lead the Vaqueros to a 52-103 victory over Valley for its second consecutive title.

Merino broke the race open with about a mile to go, going from fourth to first with a furious surge en route to a 11-second victory over Jose Perezchica of Bakersfield.

Todd Disney was third in 21:28 for two-time defending state champion Moorpark, which was third with 62 points.

``I know those guys have skills, but I decided to go,'' Merino said. ``I had to feel the pain for the team to win.''

Merino's victory and the 10-11-12-14 finish of Jorge Lopez, Rafael Ramos, Eduardo Diaz and Juan Fernandez, though, were barely enough to offset three runners among the top eight for Bakersfield, which had split the first two WSC meets with Glendale.

``I am just lucky we won today and I am going to enjoy it,'' Glendale coach Eddie Lopez said. ``I knew it was close. You never know how a race is going to develop.''

In the women's race, Harris outdueled Valley's Patricia Loera, who had beaten her in the first two conference meets. Harris, slowed by mononucleosis mononucleosis /mono·nu·cle·o·sis/ (-noo?kle-o´sis) excess of mononuclear leukocytes (monocytes) in the blood.

Harris trailed Loera by as many as 11 seconds in the first mile before pulling even at the halfway point at the top of the course's steepest incline. The two exchanged the lead several times before Harris was able to gut gut (gut)

``It was definitely a battle to catch her,'' Harris said. ``I didn't feel the greatest but I had to push it out of my mind. Mentally, I am feeling more and more confident every race.''
