Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  championships on Nov. 5 in Bakersfield. The Vaqueros have 10 runners battling for the seven-man team for the regional meet, the qualifying meet for the state finals.

``They are fighting to make the top seven and going to have to run hard,'' Lopez said. ``I don't have to make any choices. They're going to determine who's going. That's the way it should be.''

Glendale's Eduardo Diaz and Jorge Lopez, returnees from the 1998 championship squad, are expected to battle for the individual title with College of the Canyons' Brian Spangenberg, a 35-year-old freshman who began running four years ago to train for the L.A. Marathon.
