CROSS COUNTRY: D. CHRISTIAN FAVORED TODAY WRIGHT, TARAZI LEAD KNIGHTS.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Desert Christian, led by senior Jynnifer Wright and junior Claytonia Tarazi, is the favorite for the Southern Section Division V girls' cross country title at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

Chadwick. No other team in the division has run quicker than 108:00.

Desert Christian, ranked second in the state, took the first six places in the Desert Mountain League finals for its 11th consecutive team title. The Knights could be a force for several years with sophomores Amy Spoelstra, Erin Reese, Ashley Hoderland, Ruth Miller and Nadia Tarazi filling the third thorough seventh positions.

The Canyon boys' team has beaten Long Beach Poly three times this season, but the Cowboys aren't ready to predict a victory when the state's top two teams meet with the Division I title on the line.

The Cowboys, ranked second in the nation, beat the Jackrabbits in the Great American Cross Country Festival in South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States. It is bordered by North Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW). Facts and Figures

``I am kind of nervous because I know Poly is going to be up there,'' Canyon junior Ryan Morgan said. ``It is so close that each and every one of us is going to have to give every single thing that we have got.''

Morgan's concerns about Poly are well-founded. The Jackrabbits, the nation's preseason top-ranked team, have yet to run against Canyon at full strength.

. The Jackrabbits were without senior Oscar Mendez at Clovis and Mt. SAC because of sore shins. Mendez missed three weeks of training but competed in the league finals and several dual meets. He is questionable for the section finals.

``Obviously with him, it will be a lot easier,'' Durham said. ``Everyone says we have no chance. It's a good situation for us to come in and surprise. We have to improve a lot, but we have the ability. We have looked at all the scenarios and what we have to do.''

Poly coach George Wright George Wright may refer to:

tried to develop a mystique about the Jackrabbits in the finals. He ran only six runners in the preliminaries last Saturday instead of seven. Wright has been jokingly spreading a rumor through the team's Web site that the Jackrabbits' No. 3 runner, freshman Maurice Duchet, who is out for the season because of injury, was omitted from the scoring in Poly's heat victory.

There's no secret Poly will need to overcome Canyon's talented top three of seniors Luke Llamas and Jameson Mora MORA, In civil law. This term, in mora, is used to denote that a party to a contract, who is obliged to do anything, has neglected to perform it, and is in default. Story on Bailm. SAC Invitational when Canyon ran to a course-record team time.

Poly will have the advantage of greater depth in the third through seventh runners with juniors Kevin Word, Luis Ruiz Luis Ruiz is a fictional character on the HBO drama Oz played by Gary Perez.

The Jackrabbits could have an extra edge in the state meet with a 24-team field in the state championships at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Canyon juniors Troy Werner and Alex Harris have steadily been closing the gap on the first five runners. Junior Mark Bingham Mark Kendall Bingham (May 22, 1970 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA– September 11, 2001 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, USA) was an American public relations executive who founded his own company, the Bingham Group.  and sophomore Jace Getskow are also capable of running among the Cowboys' top five.

``Not a week goes by where we don't say they are as good as we are,'' Canyon coach Dave DeLong said about Poly. ``Each time you beat them. Every time that you move up in the rankings. Each time somebody says Canyon is the team. It puts more pressure on us to win. I am sure all the accolades are wonderful, but the bottom line is we all want the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing.
