CROSS COUNTRY: A RUN FOR THE RIGHTS CANYON, POLY TO MEET AGAIN.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Canyon High has beaten Long Beach Poly three times this season, but the Cowboys aren't ready to predict a victory when the state's top two teams meet with the Southern Section Division I title on the line at today Mt. The Cowboys, ranked second in the nation, beat the Jackrabbits in the Great American Cross Country Festival in South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States. It is bordered by North Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW). Facts and Figures

``I am kind of nervous because I know Poly is going to be up there,'' Canyon junior Ryan Morgan said. ``It is so close that each and every one of us is going to have to give every single thing that we have got.''

Morgan's concerns about Poly are well-founded. The Jackrabbits, the nation's top-ranked team in the preseason, has yet to run against Canyon at full strength.

Senior Bryan Durham had a sub-par effort at the South Carolina festival because of a lingering respiratory ailment ail·ment

. The Jackrabbits were without senior Oscar Mendez at Clovis and Mt. SAC because of sore shins. He missed three weeks of training but competed in the league finals and several dual meets; he is questionable for the section finals.

``Obviously with him, it will be a lot easier,'' Durham said. ``Every one says we have no chance. It's a good situation for us to come in and surprise. We have to improve a lot but we have the ability. We have looked at all the scenarios and what we have to do.''

Poly coach George Wright George Wright may refer to:

has tried to develop an aura of mystery around his Jackrabbits in the finals. He ran only six runners in the preliminaries last Saturday instead of seven.

Wright jokingly has been spreading a rumor through the team's Web site that the Jackrabbits' No. 3 runner - freshman Maurice Duchet, who is out for the season because of injury - was omitted from the scoring in Poly's heat victory.

There's no secret Poly must overcome Canyon's talented top three of seniors Luke Llamas and Jameson Mora MORA, In civil law. SAC invitational, when Canyon ran to a course-record team time.

Poly will have the advantage of greater depth through the third and seventh runners with juniors Kevin Word, Luis Ruiz Luis Ruiz is a fictional character on the HBO drama Oz played by Gary Perez.

``Not a week goes by where we don't say they are as good as we are,'' Canyon coach Dave DeLong said about Poly. ``Each time you beat them. Every time that you move up in the rankings. Each time somebody says Canyon is the team. It puts more pressure on us to win. I am sure all the accolades are wonderful but the bottom line is we all want the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing.
