CROONERS: THE NEXT GENERATION PETER CINCOTTI AND MICHAEL BUBLE SET NEW STANDARDS AS YOUNG SINGERS WITH CLASSIC REPERTOIRES.

Byline: Sandra Barrera Staff Writer

Peter Cincotti was singing the old Rodgers and Hart standard ``I Didn't Know What Time It Was'' at the Songwriter's Hall of Fame last fall when a woman from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Foundation asked, ``Who is this guy?

``How come he's singing instead of Bernadette Peters?''

``I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to all that stuff growing up,'' said Cincotti, who began weaving nuanced progressions using jazz chords This article is intended to describe and explain some of the chords and chord symbols which are commonly found in Jazz music.

``I don't even know if I was legally allowed in the clubs,'' Cincotti said with a snort. (Even he is amused that he's made it so young.) ``I don't even know if I still am, to a certain extent, because in the places where they serve liquor I can't even go to the bar.''

Coming into his own

Those in the audience at Manhattan's fabled Oak Room last year when Cincotti's voice cracked on the first note of the night were reminded of just how young he was.

Looking up, Cincotti just shrugged and said, ``I'm a teenager.''

The audience erupted with laughter. Whatever it is, the kid has got it.

``He's not only extremely intelligent but sensitive and has a great relationship with the audience that I'm so pleased about,'' said Ramone, who was so delighted by that performance that the 10-time Grammy winner - who has worked with everybody from Stan Getz Stanley Gayetsky (February 2, 1927 in Philadelphia – June 6, 1991 in Malibu, California), usually known by his stage name Stan Getz, was an American jazz musician.  and Joao Gilberto to Frank Sinatra and Dianne Schuur - offered to produce Cincotti's self-titled debut on Concord Records Concord Records is a well-known U.S. jazz record label, based in Beverly Hills, California.  such as ``Sway'' and includes a jazzed-up ``Fool on the Hill/Nature Boy'' - which combines the Beatles classic with the Eden Ahbez-penned standard originally recorded by Nat King Cole - as well as the catchy originals written in the classic style by Cincotti himself.

In contrast, Buble's first effort consists of all new reworkings of old standards.

`` I think that's important, too,'' added Brad Chambers, program director of the Los Angeles-based standards radio KLAC-AM (570). ``With Michael, you have a contemporary young artist reintroducing these timeless songs to a whole new generation.''

From Canada, with love

For much of his 27 years, Buble (pronounced boo-BLAY) has wanted to share the music that was introduced to him by his grandfather, still one of his biggest fans.

He got his big break thanks to Brian Mulroney - yes, the former Canadian prime minister - who introduced Buble to David Foster, the Grammy-winning producer and Warner Bros. Records Warner Bros. ``The great thing is, he's tapped into a repertoire that can last him 50 years,'' Foster said. ``He's at the beginning of a very long career.''

But the Vancouver native, who started singing at 13, admits he didn't get much support from his friends in the beginning. In fact, most thought that he was nuts when he turned down the chance to record a pop album for a great deal of money.

Just as the hip-hop end of the industry requires a certain street credibility of its icons, crooners have their own sense of credibility too. It just wouldn't do to switch genres in mid-swoon.

The neo-swing movement of the mid-'90s, for example, saw a swarm of acts that had been playing punk rock the week before transform into fedora-wearing hepcats. Recalling that spasm of pretense, Buble said he doesn't want to pretend to be something he's not.

``I believe that I started off as an impersonator and that I tried to take the very best things that I liked about every single singer that I liked,'' Buble said citing, among others, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Bobby Darin and Dean Martin. ``But I tried to be a healthy combination of all of them as opposed to trying to imitate any one.''

All about the songs

But if the jazz vocal revival is going to be more than just a fad, there will have to be new music and not just well-done interpretations of the good old stuff.

``Some of my favorite songs are about lost love and a lot of the things that come along the way when you're a little older, like 'September of My Years' or 'Second Time Around,' '' Cincotti said. ``There's hundreds of songs like that that I would rather save until I feel I can put my personal interpretation on them. For now, I would rather sing songs about love that I think are more appropriate for someone my age.''

Cincotti even writes some with encouragement from Ramone.

``I tell him, 'All you have to do is write one great song at a time, and that adds to your evening,'' he said. ``That's how a lot of people have become great stars.''
