CRITICS TO OPPOSE LAX PLAN PETITION DRIVE TO BEGIN AGAINST HAHN PROPOSAL FOR MODERNIZING AIRPORT.

Byline: Rick Orlov Staff Writer

Critics plan to launch a petition drive today protesting the proposed $9.1 billion modernization plan for Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

James Kenneth "Jim" Hahn (born July 3, 1950) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He was the Deputy City Attorney (1975-1979), City Controller (1981-1985), City Attorney (1985-2001) and Mayor of Los Angeles, California
 characterized Friday as ``nuts.''

Hahn's remark came as he defended his proposal, which would cap passenger growth at 78 million a year, eliminate several aircraft gates and create a satellite passenger and baggage check-in area at LAX.

``We are going to move forward with our plan,'' Hahn said. ``I'm committed to keeping my promise to cap growth.''

``Mayor Hahn's reference to me or our effort as 'nuts' is an arrogant response. We believe we will be showing in the coming months that tens of thousands of Los Angeles residents agree with us.

``If the mayor wants to characterize them as 'nuts' as well, I would urge them to remember that when they go to the polls next March.''

Initial efforts will be made to collect signatures of residents in the immediate area, but will be broadened later to include all areas of the city, Gordon said.

The dispute is the latest controversy surrounding the LAX plan, which has drawn an alternate proposal from Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski, who represents the area, and officials including Rep. Jane Harman, D-El Segundo.

Hahn said he has been surprised at the opposition to his proposal, which sought to deal with the concerns raised about earlier proposals to modernize LAX.

``I'm kind of disappointed in the reactions from Gordon and Harman. (The LAX) plan is based on the overwhelming objections to earlier plans. We need to do something at the airport.''

Miscikowski has called for scaling back some of the more ambitious and controversial aspects of Hahn's proposal - such as a ground transportation center - and giving greater authority to the City Council on future development.
