CRITICS HIT MTA STUDY ON VALLEY RAIL LINK.

will spend $150,000 to study the feasibility of building a light-rail route or busway connecting the Red and Orange lines in North Hollywood to the Gold Line in Pasadena.

The study is designed to provide in-depth analysis for a $90,000 report commissioned by Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena of the ``Missing Link'' route, which would run parallel to the Ventura Freeway The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California running from Ventura to Pasadena. But officials note the route would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and isn't included on the MTA's long-range list of transportation priorities.

``There's a host of projects out there,'' MTA spokesman Rick Jager said. ``How do you get the funding for all of them?''

Paul Dyson, a member of the Burbank Transportation Commission, believes the MTA study is a waste of money, saying previous studies have already shown that a light-rail link would simply be too costly.

``I think that the proposed study has good intentions, but the choices available are so few because there is no readily available rail route in that area,'' said Dyson, who owns Dyson Rail, a transportation consultant for the freight industry. ``So the conclusion of any study would almost certainly be that a bus-based system is the only reasonable alternative.''
