Her parents and doctors stayed by her side, waiting for a sign that she might recover.

``The family continues to pray, and we ask others to do the same,'' her mother, Kathy Pilkinton, said in a statement.

The 17-year-old Sylmar girl has undergone brain surgery, and there have been efforts to repair head fractures, her doctor said. ``She is in critical condition with a very, very severe head injury,'' Dr. Jonathan Heard, Emily's trauma surgeon, said.

Heard said Emily's family and friends have displayed remarkable courage and support for the victim.

``Ninety kids showed up wanting to see her. I've yet to see this significant number of people attempting to be involved with one critically injured person. It's very impressive,'' the doctor said.

Heard has allowed many of Pilkinton's friends to visit her.

Pilkinton was critically injured Sunday when the car driven by a friend crashed into a truck parked on the Wilbur Avenue overpass of the Ronald Reagan Freeway, police said.
