IT'S been obvious for years that the corpse of the Turner Prize is floating belly up.

We've got to the stage where nonentities are nominated who don't merit the publicity and career promotion the prize gives them.

If you must nominate four or five artists every year for a quarter of a century, very quickly you start plumbing the murky depths at the bottom of the barrel.

Each generation throws up four or five decent artists but nowhere near a hundred..

We are now dealing with the barrel scrapings.

They always say the new nominees' works as "rich and profound", "arresting", "elaborately transformed" and "subtle and exquisite". They say it every year - but the work always fails to live up to its billing.

The reason the Turner Prize hasn't been quietly swept under the carpet has much to do with the Tate saving face.

To switch the prize off now would be to admit that it's been brain dead for years..
