CRIT-O-MATIC.

Byline: - David Kronke

MISS MATCH - Two and one half stars

Logline: Kate Fox (Alicia Silverstone) has two jobs that, depending on how you look at it, either are thoroughly synergistic or represent an utter conflict of interest: Matchmaker Matchmaker - A language for specifying and automating the generation of multi-lingual interprocess communication interfaces. MIG is an implementation of a subset of Matchmaker.  and divorce attorney. Her father/boss, Jerrold (Ryan O'Neal), frowns on her moonlighting, but that may be because he can't stand happy people (not that he doesn't realize it: He notes, ``We're divorce attorneys - we could walk on water and no one would be impressed''). Kate goes trolling (1) Surfing, or browsing, the Web.

(2) Posting derogatory messages about sensitive subjects on newsgroups and chat rooms to bait users into responding.

(3) Hanging around in a chat room without saying anything, like a "peeping tom."

Noteworthy performances: Silverstone's a charmer charm·er

1. One that charms, especially a disarmingly attractive person.

2. One who casts spells; an enchanter or magician.

 (Channel 4).

When: 8 tonight.

In a nutshell: Incredibly dumb premise, courtesy of ``Sex and the City's'' Darren Star, but handled in a souffle-light fashion, and well-scheduled - on Fridays, it's guaranteed to appeal to romantic lonely hearts.

THE ANIMATION CENTURY - Three stars

Logline: Ambitiously assembled history of animation A Basic Summary of Animation: Past, Present and Future.
The Past

The animated goblet

5000 years ago, in actual Iran, a goblet was used to display animation.
, from the earliest efforts to the latest Pixar blockbusters, featuring a great assortment of rarely seen works from around the world. Clips range from the most commercial stuff (Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Popeye and Superman) to eccentric and personal expressions (Bill Plympton, Nick Park).

Where: Bravo.

When: 8 tonight.

In a nutshell: Even the fact that the animated framing sequences that serve as the documentary's structure seem aimed either at animation neophytes - or worse, complete morons - can't diminish the dizzying entertainment to be had from the artfully assembled montage of clips.

HOPE & FAITH - One and one half stars

Logline: Hope (Faith Ford) is an efficient if somewhat drab mother of three; her sister Faith (Kelly Ripa) is a ditsy dit·sy also dit·zy
adj. dit·si·er also dit·zi·er, dit·si·est also dit·zi·est Slang
Eccentric or scatterbrained: "Needless to say, this ditsy crew succeeds in spite of itself"

hits the fan and even more cliches abound.

Noteworthy performances: Everyone's as broad as barns.

Originality: One and one half stars

Credibility: One star

Laughs per episode: If you're big on food fights, there's one tonight as the sisters unsheathe both their claws and sundry condiments.

Inadvertent laughs: All you need to know is that Hope's husband is played by Ted McGinley, jumptheshark.com's Patron Saint of Bad Television. And that they sought him out having already cast another actor.

Where: ABC ABC
 in full American Broadcasting Co.

Major U.S. television network. It began when the expanding national radio network NBC split into the separate Red and Blue networks in 1928.
 (Channel 7).

When: 9 tonight.

In a nutshell: Tonight's premiere manages to combine the plots of the first two episodes of the WB's very similar (and similarly lousy) show ``Like Family'' - the unwelcome interloper manages a moment of nobility and the harried couple unable to have sex because of all the mayhem under their roof tries to pencil in some time for romance - and manages to throw in that food fight for good measure. It's connect-the-dots TV at its most obvious.

THE HANDLER - Three stars

Logline: Celebrated character actor Joe Pantoliano is reunited with his noggin nog·gin
n.
1. A small mug or cup.

2. A unit of liquid measure equal to one quarter of a pint.

(after misplacing it on ``The Sopranos'') to play Joe Renato, an FBI agent who leads a team of undercover agents (Anna Belknap, Lola Glaudini, Hill Harper and Tanya Wright) playing diverse roles to solve difficult crimes.

Noteworthy performances: Pantoliano is a singularly entertaining actor to watch, but his supporting cast works hard to match his talents.

Originality: Three stars

Credibility: Three stars

Effectively dramatic moments: Unlike many crime-procedural dramas, these aren't perfect officers who direct events unfolding like clockwork; there are unexpected botches that force them to improvise in intriguing fashions.

Inadvertent laughs: Joe has a gratuitously jailbird brother.

Who should get a raise: The supporting cast - Belknap, Glaudini, Harper and Wright - who get to play completely new characters every episode.

Where: CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  (Channel 2).

When: 10 tonight.

In a nutshell: A most entertaining spin on the average cop crime-procedural could only be improved by having Joey Pants himself join the fray and go undercover.
