Ron Eldard stars as Jim Dunbar, a New York detective who lost his sight in a spectacular shootout and seems on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955. of losing his marriage (to Rena Sofer). His desire to return to duty is met with something less than enthusiasm by his colleagues, including his new partner, Karen Bettancourt (Marisol Nichols), since he bangs his shins into precinct furniture. But he employs his heightened other senses - kind of like the superhero su·per·he·ro n. pl. su·per·he·roes A figure, especially in a comic strip or cartoon, endowed with superhuman powers and usually portrayed as fighting evil or crime. Daredevil, only without the goofy costume and bad Ben Affleck performance, or Monk, only without Tony Shalhoub's Emmy Award - so he makes himself useful against the odds anyway. Pros: Nice guide dog. Cons: How does a cop show with limits on its imagination quickly grab its audience these days? A kinky sex crime serial killer, naturally. Guess how this one begins. Rather programmatically, Dunbar and Bettancourt grab a lot of cases that make them unpopular in the precinct. And how many times can they contrive con·trive v. con·trived, con·triv·ing, con·trives v.tr. 1. To plan with cleverness or ingenuity; devise: contrive ways to amuse the children. 2. to put a gun in a blind guy's hands, as they do tonight? In a nutshell: Eldard can be an empathetic protagonist at times, but the cases are pretty obvious and monochromatic monochromatic /mono·chro·mat·ic/ (-kro-mat´ik) 1. existing in or having only one color. 2. pertaining to or affected by monochromatic vision. 3. staining with only one dye at a time. . Future episodes tread equally tired turf - a child murder and cop-killer - with unremarkable results. A softer, soft-headed ``NYPD NYPD New York City Police Department (since 1845; New York City, NY, USA) NYPD New York Play Development Blue''; even Mike Post's music is a faint echo of his work on that show.
