CRISIS IN SCHOOL NURSE NUMBERS.Byline: EMILY COOK STATE school nurses are massively overstretched, nursing leaders warned yesterday. The average school nurse is spread over 7.6 schools and 2,500 pupils. At same time they are taking on more responsibilities - growing obesity levels, sexual health problems and child protection issues. They also have to deal with the highest level of teenage pregnancy and teenage abortion in Europe. Dr Carter said: "School nurses must spend time with pupils to make a difference. Children are being short-changed."
