James Daniels, 19, was shot outside the Daland Swim School after deputies feared he would harm patrons with a sharp object he was carrying. Daniels already had cut his own arm.

Officers used Mace and rubber bullets but failed to stop him.

Boyd said he was shot after ``it became obvious that Daniels was not going to stop before reaching the school entrance.''

Swimming students, ranging in age from grade school to high school, sought safety in the school's bathroom with their instructors.

Boyd described Daniels - who friends said was a diagnosed schizophrenic - as ``totally unresponsive unresponsive Neurology adjective Referring to a total lack of response to neurologic stimuli  to any requests or demands from deputies.''

Even after Daniels was struck, Boyd said, he continued moving toward the school until more shots were fired.
