Blue'' had it in the bag, NBC's ``Law & Order'' came from behind Sunday to nab the outstanding drama series honor at the 49th Annual Prime-time Emmy Awards.

``NYPD Blue'' appeared to be a shoo-in after capturing best drama series actor for Dennis Franz Dennis Franz (born October 28, 1944) is an Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning American actor known for his role as Andy Sipowicz, a gritty police detective in the television series NYPD Blue. , supporting actress supporting actress nattrice f non protagonista  for Kim Delaney, directing for Mark Tinker Mark Tinker (born January 16, 1951) is an American television producer and director. Franz, clutching his third Emmy for portraying Detective Andy Sipowicz Andy Sipowicz was a fictional character on the popular ABC television series NYPD Blue. He was played for the entire run of the show by Dennis Franz.

, reflected the giddy anticipation when he said, ``This night is a lot more fun than it has been in the last couple of years 'cause we're winning stuff - and it's great.''

Then came the announcement of ``Law & Order,'' a dark horse even after six consecutive drama series nominations. It won only one other Emmy this year, a cinematography cinematography: see motion picture photography.

In addition to ``NYPD Blue NYPD Blue is an Emmy Award-winning hour long-running American television police drama set in New York City. It was created by Steven Bochco and David Milch and inspired by Milch's relationship with a former member of the New York City Police Department Bill Clark (who ,'' ``Law & Order'' beat out ``The X-Files'' (Fox), ``Chicago Hope'' (CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast. ) and ``ER'' (NBC).

``ER,'' which had 22 nominations, wound up with only three Emmys, all presented at the creative arts ceremonies.

NBC's ``Frasier'' entered the television academy record books with its fourth victory in a row for top comedy series. Its ``To Kill a Talking Bird'' episode also brought a directing honor for David Lee David Lee may refer to:

``On my way up here just now, I heard someone say, `Oh God, not them again,' '' said ``Frasier'' executive producer David Angell David Lawrence Angell (April 10, 1946 – September 11, 2001) was an American television sitcom producer. Angell won multiple Emmy Awards as the creator and executive producer, along with Peter Casey and David Lee, of the comedy series Frasier. . ``Believe me, we know how lucky we are.''

The ``coming out'' episode of ABC's ``Ellen'' failed to bring awards in the comedy series or lead actress categories, but it captured best comedy series writing, allowing Ellen DeGeneres Ellen Lee DeGeneres (born January 26, 1958) is an American stand-up comedian, actress, and currently the Emmy Award-winning host of the syndicated talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

``I accept this on the behalf of all of the people, and the teen-agers especially, out there who think there's something wrong with them because they're gay,'' DeGeneres said. ``And there's nothing wrong with you. Don't ever let anybody make you feel ashamed of who you are.''

Helen Hunt claimed the comedy series actress award for the second year in a row for ``Mad About You,'' while John Lithgow won his second consecutive comedy actor Emmy for ``3rd Rock From the Sun.''

Lithgow saluted the series' writers, saying, ``Without you I'm not funny at all. Witness this speech.''

Gillian Anderson of ``The X-Files'' won her first Emmy as best drama series actress with her second nomination. She focused her thank-yous on her family, noting that her parents and younger brother and sister have been ``wonderfully normal about this whole celebrity thing.''

``I'm still their big sis, and I want to shake them and say, `Don't you know who I am?''' she quipped.

NBC led the race with a total of 24 awards (15 of them given out at the earlier creative arts awards ceremonies), followed by HBO's 19, CBS' 12, ABC's 10, PBS' 6 and Fox's 5.

HBO's most-honored program was the movie ``Miss Evers' Boys,'' which claimed the made-for-TV movie honor, best actress in a miniseries or special for Alfre Woodard and the prestigious President's Award.

Michael Richards picked up his third comedy supporting actor Emmy as the bumbling Kramer in ``Seinfeld,'' and Kristen Johnston won the supporting actress honor for her work on ``3rd Rock From the Sun.''

Hector Elizondo won the drama series supporting actor honor for ``Chicago Hope.''

Bette Midler celebrated her return to the concert stage with an Emmy for outstanding performance in a variety or music program for ``Bette Midler: Diva Las Vegas.''

``Tracey Takes On ...'' on HBO was named outstanding variety, music or comedy series. Six-time winner Tracey Ullman said, ``Thank you to all my characters, and to my lovely (children) Johnny and Mabel who don't mind that I dress up as a Middle Eastern man.''

Beau Bridges took home his third career Emmy as supporting actor in a miniseries or special for ``The Second Civil War,'' while Diana Rigg was honored in the supporting actress category for ``Rebecca.''

Armand Assante's portrayal of mob boss John Gotti in HBO's ``Gotti'' brought him the lead actor in a miniseries or special award. PBS' ``Prime Suspect 5: Errors of Judgment'' was named top miniseries, the third win for the ongoing British series.

Don Mischer, producer of the Emmy telecast at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, stepped out from the booth to accept the award for directing a variety or music program for his work on the opening ceremonies of the Centennial Olympic Games.

News veteran Bryant Gumbel hosted the three-hour ceremony, which was televised by CBS and reached an estimated 620 million viewers in 90 countries.

Gumbel seemed most comfortable handling the sober moments of the show, such as the tribute to the late NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff, while relegating the humor to comic performers such as Andy Dick, Janeane Garofalo and Jerry Seinfeld.
