A criminal homicide committed with malice is known as murder, otherwise it is called manslaughter.  and rape to assault, robbery and auto theft in the 12-month period ending Dec. 31 was obtained this week from police in both cities.

But authorities said the raw data still have to be reviewed before they submit a final report to the FBI, which tracks violent crime across the nation.

In Burbank, violent crime fell about 1 percent, with 2,974 cases reported, police said.

Burglary burglary, at common law, the breaking and entering of a dwelling house of another at night with the intent to commit a felony, whether the intent is carried out or not. , felony felony (fĕl`ənē), any grave crime, in contrast to a misdemeanor, that is so declared in statute or was so considered in common law.  theft and auto theft either decreased slightly or saw no change, but they were offset by gains in robberies -- 75 cases, up from 68 in 2005, and rape, which saw three more for a total of 13.

"Although you have fluctuations in there, your overall crime rate has always decreased over the last three years," he said. "The other thing to keep in mind is population is increasing. You might expect crime to increase, but we're able to decrease crime."

In Glendale, violent crime increased 4 percent in 2006, with 4,301 cases reported. Burglaries and auto theft decreased from 2005, and homicides fell 90 percent, to two from 19 cases, a figure inflated by the Metrolink crash two years ago in which 11 people were killed.

But robberies increased 22 percent with 167 cases reported, and auto burglaries jumped 24 percent with 774 cases.
