CRICKET INTRODUCES FIRST ELECTRONIC LIGHTER WITH CHILD-RESISTANT FEATURE
ATLANTA, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Cricket, Inc., a pioneer in disposable lighter technology, announced today that it has launched the first electronic lighter with a child-resistant mechanism. The new lighters is called Cricket(R) Electronic(TM). Cricket, Inc., is a unit of Cricket B.V., Nyon, Switzerland.
"It's the right thing to do," said Pete Delin, general manager, Cricket USA, who pointed out that the new product conforms to the proposed CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) child-resistant lighter standard. "Although these as well as all other Cricket lighters are adult products and prominently display a warning label which reads, 'keep away from children,'" continued Delin, "the new child-resistant mechanism will make it more difficult for children to light. Like child-resistant features on medicine bottles, we realize that no CR mechanism is foolproof, but we are satisfied that the Cricket Electronic is state-of-the-art technology for our industry. Still," he added, "people should keep all lighters, including child-resistant lighters, away from children."
In addition to the child-resistant feature, Cricket Electronic will offer other safety features such as a fixed flame to provide an acceptable flame height of less than two inches and a self-extinguishing nylon barrel.
Although the electronic child-resistant mechanism will make it more difficult for youngsters to light, the act of producing ignition is surprisingly easy for adults," pointed out Delin. "The consumer should push the child-resistant lever in and then depress the ignition lever to light. The mechanism automatically resets. After trying it a few times, there is no inconvenience at all," he noted.
According to the Cricket executive, electronic-type lighters will be the driving force for industry growth during the nineties. Consumers prefer the cleanliness and convenience of a pushbutton electronic feature. And, Cricket research shows that consumers with or without children will buy the Cricket Electronic with the adult friendly child- resistant mechanism.
