CRICKET: Tough break for Bears ace Nick; SKIPPER'S INJURY THREATENS WARWICKSHIRE'S TITLE QUEST.

WARWICKSHIRE have suffered another blow to their hopes of winning the County Championship for the first time in nine years with the news that captain Nick Knight will be out of action for at least two weeks.

The former England openerhas a broken bone in his right hand - an injury sustained against Middlesex at Lord's three weeks ago but not diagnosed until he had X-rays on Tuesday.

He will see a specialist in Birmingham tomorrow when the full extent of the injury should be known, but has already been ruled out until at least Mid-July.

Dougie Brown, who lost his post as Warwickshire's vice captain in April, is deputising for Knight during the current championship match at Beckenham.

Knight joins two overseas fast bowlers, Heath Streak (torn stomach muscle) and Dewald Pretorius Dewald Pretorius is a cricket player (born 6 December, 1977 in Pretoria, South Africa). He is a right-arm fast bowler who debuted for the South African Test team in the second Test against Australia during the 2001/2002 series.  (thigh) plus seamers Graham Wagg Graham Wagg (born April 28, 1983) is an English cricketer who currently plays for Derbyshire, having been at Warwickshire since 1999.

Wagg will play for the county's Second XI and for C&NW in the Birmingham League purely as a batsman.

Wicketkeeper Keith Piper will make his comeback in Monday's Second XI Trophy match against Northamptonshire at Coventry & North Warwickshire's Binley Road headquarters (11.00am).

Piper missed the first two months of the season with a broken right ring finger which he sustained taking a delivery from Pretorius in a pre-season game at Southampton in April.

He then suffered a thigh strain on his comeback in the Second XI match against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham three weeks ago but has now fully recovered from both injuries.

Piper, who was Warwickshire's regular keeper in one-day cricket last season, may have timed his return well as the county embark on three weeks of non-stop limited overs cricket Limited overs cricket, also known as one-day cricket and in a slightly different context as List A cricket, is a version of the sport of cricket in which a match is generally completed in one day, whereas Test and first-class matches can take up to five days to  next week with the start of the Twenty20 Cup.

But he could find it difficult to dislodge his understudy, Tony Frost, who is averaging almost 90 with the bat this season and who has also been reliable behind the stumps.

There was no play on the first day of Warwickshire's match against Kent at Beckenham yesterday as rain devastated the Frizzell County Championship programme.

Only three matches got underway but Sussex endured a wretched day at gale-lashed Arundel, where Gloucestershire hustled them out for just 106 before reaching 63 without loss at the close.

Pace bowler Jonathan Lewis put the skids under the county champions by snapping up 5-33 in 13 overs to take his season's tally to 34.

Arundel: Sussex 106 (J Lewis 5-33), Gloucestershire 63-0

New Road: Surrey 16-2 v Worcestershire

The Rose Bowl: Yorkshire 34-1 v Hampshire.
