CREWS GIRD AGAINST STORM MUDSLIDES, FLOODING BIGGEST CONCERNS.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Road crews spent Tuesday preparing for what was expected to be the first big storm of the season, paying special attention to areas that burned over the summer and were left subject to mudslides and flooding.

With a flood watch in effect through today, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (LACDPW) is responsible for the construction and operation of Los Angeles County's roads, building safety, sewerage, and flood control.  transported road barricades and ``road closed'' signs Tuesday to Placerita Canyon Road in case heavy rain brought rivers of debris from the mountainsides burned in July's Foothill Fire.

Meanwhile Santa Clarita city workers monitored National Weather Service radar to determine when the storm would hit. Up to 3 inches of rain was expected overnight and through today. Road crews were particularly concerned about flood-prone areas including Wiley Canyon, Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling , Sand Canyon and Placerita Canyon.

Since rain began falling on the region Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. , marking the first period of rainfall since April, about 1.5 inches had fallen in Santa Clarita by Tuesday morning.

The new storm was expected to ``pack a greater punch,'' producing strong winds in mountain areas and rainfall totals that ``are expected to be rather impressive for October, ranging from 1 to 3 inches on the coast and in the valleys and up to 3 to 6 inches in the foothills and mountains,'' according to according to

City officials are hoping year-round maintenance will pay off.

``The work that the city has been doing all year long to clear storm drains and repair roadways will help prevent major problems in public right-of-ways as we head into the rainy season,'' said Chris Daste, the city's field services director.

Rain is expected to continue today, turning to light showers by afternoon. High temperatures will hover in the low 60s with winds hitting about 20 mph, according to the weather service. In the northwest regions of the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  - where about 35,000 acres burned in three July wildfires - U.S. Forest Service officials viewed the weather as good news and bad. The ``high-intensity'' rainfall the weather service predicted is what is needed to restore moisture to the vegetation in the forest, but the flooding potential is great after the brush fires.

Despite the concern for flooding, most of the Angeles National Forest will be reopened at 6 a.m. today for recreational use, thanks to the rains this week.
