CREWS FINISH CONTROLLED BURN.

Byline: Daily News

Firefighters on Tuesday completed a 440-acre controlled burn Prescribed or controlled burning (back burning) is a technique sometimes used in forest management, farming, prairie restoration or greenhouse gas abatement. Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters.  - one that burned out of control briefly the previous night - in the forest area near Canyon Country.

About 6 p.m. Monday, the fire briefly jumped the lines, but was quickly brought under control, firefighters said.

The burn is among a number of prescribed fires planned in the Angeles to destroy heavy vegetation as U.S. Forest Service officials anticipate a severe fire season.

Meanwhile, annual fire restrictions take effect today in the Angeles, said Forest Supervisor Michael J. Rogers.

``Heavy rainfall of El Nino helped keep the fire danger in check last summer, but produced an abundance of grass and brush growth,'' Rogers said in a statement. ``This increase in vegetation coupled with the relatively dry winter sets the stage for a very hazardous fire threat this summer.''

Campfires are prohibited outside developed camp and picnic grounds, except in portable stoves using liquid petroleum gas if a permit has been obtained. Free fire permits and copies of fire restrictions are available at Forest Service offices and ranger stations.
