``We have a lot of work to do,'' Crespi coach Tim Lins said. ``We had some opportunities to put it away.''

Across the field, Chaminade coach Tim Johnson knew what the Eagles needed to work on.

``We deserved to lose,'' Johnson said. ``Because the team with the most penalties deserves to lose. I told our team, that the team that would win tonight would be the one with less penalties, and that's what happened.''

Chaminadecommitted nine penalties for 64 yards while Crespi had five penalties for 55 yards.

Crespi seemed to have everything wrapped up when it held Chaminade on downs with 2:08 left and got the ball on the Eagles' 20-yard line. But Crespi lost 14 yards in three running plays, then punter Punter

Blake Tibbetts bobbled the snap, and was tackled at the Crespi 43 with 1:06 remaining.

Chaminade advanced to the Crespi 32 with 11 seconds left, but quarterback Ray Rodriguez's final pass was intercepted by Mike McNicoll.

``The defense played real well in critical situations,'' Lins said.

To the Celts' credit, there defense never appear fatigued, even though they suit up only 35 players, which is about half the roster size for league rival Loyola.

As for the Crespi offense, Lins unveiled a Wing-T formation. Tibbetts gained 85 yards in 20 carries and scored the Celts' only touchdown on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

Quarterback Kevin Cork threw only four passes in the new offense, and had one interception.

``We want to do what we think we need to do,'' Lins said, when asked about the Celts' disdain for passing the ball.

Chaminade cut the lead to 6-3 just before halftime, as Nick Onesto hit a 42-yard field goal.

The Eagles were just outside of Onesto's range on the game's final possession, when Rodriguez went deep but was intercepted.

``We were throwing for the end zone,'' Johnson said. ``We just got rushed and underthrew it.''

Rodriguez completed 7 of 21 passes for 119 yards and three interceptions.

Chaminade had an excellent opportunity to score a touchdown in the first quarter. Rodriguez completed a 51-yard pass to James Green James Green may refer to:
