Cuccias, a senior who will be attending California in the fall, struck out six Highlanders in as many innings, allowing only two hits with his submarine delivery to outduel Royal pitcher Matt Rainer.

Cuccias was relieved in the top of the seventh inning by junior right-hander Brian Felten after walking leadoff hitter In baseball, a leadoff hitter is a batter who bats first in the lineup. Strategy

single was only the third hit of the game for the Celts. Crespi has managed only two runs in the first two playoff rounds, but its pitchers have yet to surrender a run.

``I'm going to fire the hitting coach,'' joked Crespi head coach Scott Muckey, who's also the hitting coach.

It is no mystery how the Celts (22-7) have advanced to a quarterfinal matchup Friday against defending Division I champion Fountain Valley, a 17-1 winner over Arcadia.

Felten and Cuccias have been near perfect. They are throwing strikes and striking out batters in key situations. Each has pitched his best game of the season in the playoffs.

``I love to go against these teams who think they are the best and knock them down one at a time,'' Felten said.

The only threat for the Highlanders (24-3) came in the third inning. With Royal leadoff hitter Brent Egan on second, Adrian Mendoza singled to left field. Dempsey, who was playing left, charged the hard grounder and threw a strike to relay man Joey Gennaro. Gennaro bounced the throw to catcher Brian Luderer, who scooped the ball and applied the tag in time to cut down the sliding Egan.

``We couldn't ask our players to come out and play any better,'' Royal coach Dan Maye said. ``We have no reason to hang our heads. We accomplished (many) of our goals.''

Felten, who picked up the win and improved to 9-1 on the season, said, ``I just want to give our team a chance to win.''

He will get that chance on Friday, as the Celts try to do it again and knock off their third straight league champion.
