CRESPI SERVING NOTICE CELTS HAVE GONE FROM MISSION LEAGUE DOORMAT TO FIRST PLACE.

Byline: SEAN n. 1. A seine. See Seine.  CEGLINSKY Special to the Daily News

Who are these guys? And where did they come from?

The Crespi High of Encino boys' basketball team wasn't expected to make much of an impact in the Mission League race this year, not with perennial perennial, any plant that under natural conditions lives for several to many growing seasons, as contrasted to an annual or a biennial.  this season were merely hoping to compete and end up somewhere in the middle of the pack -- anywhere but at the bottom of the standings.

But Crespi has emerged as one of the bigger surprises in the area and sits in sole possession of first place in league, even after a 69-56 loss to host Notre Dame on Thursday night. The Celts are 11-9 overall and 6-1 in league.

``I don't even know where to begin. It's been a roller-coaster ride and I hope it doesn't stop,'' said Russell White, who is in his first year as coach at Crespi after a successful seven-year stint at Calabasas. ``Sure, we're surprised to be in first place, very surprised and very pleased. We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, though. The season is far from over. We have a long ways to go.''

of North Hollywood by 47, then won five of six, then lost five in a row heading into league play.

The outlook wasn't promising for a team that had won five league games over the past three seasons.

But Crespi started league play with six consecutive victories, including an eye-opening upset of Loyola, the Celts' first win over the Cubs since 2001 and first at home against the league frontrunner in over 10 years.

A five-point victory over the Harvard-Westlake three days later restored some much-needed confidence and marked the Celts' first victory over the Wolverines since 2002.

``No one thought Crespi would go undefeated in its firstsix league games. No one,'' said Chaminade coach Bryan Cantwell, whose team was swept in its regular-season series with Crespi for the firsttime since 2001. ``They're rolling, though. Give them credit. Russell has done a great job. They've had some success and control their own fate now. It will be interesting to see how they handle things the rest of the way.''

Joseph Fauria finished his commitments with the football team in late February and has been a solid contributor since joining the Celts in the thirdgame of the season. The 6-foot-7 junior post player is averaging 11.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Seniors Andrew Nulman, Matt Gray, Gibran Kahn and Matt Adelman do the dirty work on both ends of the floor, each willing to sacrifice personal numbers for team success.

``Truth be told, we don't really have any stars on this team, no one who can drop 30 or 40 points on any given night,'' Fauria said. ``Everyone is contributing, and we're finding ways to win. That's all that counts.''

the sudden hype surrounding the program. But there's no disputing that a league title remains a possibility. Beyond that, a postseason appearance appears attainable.

A fourth-place finish in league would assure the Celts an automatic berth in the Southern Section Div. I-AA playoffs. At worst, they could petition for an at-large berth with at least 12 wins.

``From my perspective, the kids have bought into the system and believe they can win,'' said Crespi athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Dick Dornan, who coached the Celts for nineyears before the arrival of White. ``This group has come a long way. They've exceeded everyone's expectations. People are seeing them in a different light.''

Make no mistake, Crespi is not content with the fast start. This is a goal-oriented group, one determined to prove its ascent ASCENT Interventional cardiology A clinical trial–ACS Stent Clinical Equivalence in de Novo lesions Trial  to the top is no fluke fluke, parasitic flatworm of the trematoda class, related to the tapeworm. A league title would serve as a validation.

There will be plenty of tests along the way, beginning Saturday against Verbum Dei. Things don't get any easier after that with games on the road at Loyola and Harvard-Westlake in the nextweek and a half.

Whether Crespi can go from near the bottom of the Mission League to league champion remains to be seen. One thing is certain: The Celts are headed in the right direction after opening league play with six consecutive victories for the first time since 1986.

``We've been considered the dormat of the league for a while now, but we knew we had a chance to turn things around,'' Gray said. ``We used to be the hunters; now we're the hunted.''

Q&A ...WITH KOURTNEY ZILBERT

A senior forward on the Burroughs of Burbank girls' basketball team, Zilbert has registered team highs of 14.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game this season. The 5-foot-8 standout, who tore her ACL See access control list.

before last season, has helped establish the Indians (14-4 overall, 4-1 Pacific League) as one of the top teams in the area.

DN: Last season, you averaged just seven points and sevenrebounds per game. How do you explain the spike in stats to begin this season?

KZ: I was bouncing back from knee surgery last year, so I was a little cautious at times. I babied the injury at first, and I didn't feel 100percent again until the final few games. I'm finally healthy again this season, so I guess it's finally starting to click.

DN: Your stats indicate that you can take over a game as a scorer and as a rebounder. What part of your game do you take the most pride in?

KZ: Scoring is the fun part, I'm not going to lie. But I take pride in my rebounding as well. I guess you could say I like doing both. Rebounding is fun because it's more of a team effort.

DN: Your team is off to a 14-4 start this season despite finishing 14-14 last year. When did you realize how well you guys were capable of playing?

KZ: In January of last year, when we beat Hart (of Newhall) 54-53 despite entering the game as huge underdogs. Nobody thought we could beat them, so it proved to us that we were good enough to beat anybody. Last year's team was talented, but we were a little young. This year's team has six seniors, and we have really matured together.

DN: This season marks Burroughs' first in the Pacific League after decades in the Foothill League. Although the Foothill is considered the premier league in the area, the Pacific League boasts an elite team in Muir of Pasadena -- ranked No. 8 in the state by calpreps.com.

How do the leagues compare to one another?

KZ: The Foothill League is better from top to bottom, no question. But the Pacific League is not exactly weak, because Muir is as good as any Foothill League team out there. We take every game in this league seriously, because anybody is capable of beating anybody else. Weproved that last year when we beat Hart.

DN: Two of your losses this season have come to Muir (14-1 overall, 5-0 Pacific), which you host on Feb. 2 with a Pacific League title potentially on the line. Do you guys believe you have a shot at the upset?

KZ: Absolutely. We're going to be at home this time, which should make a big difference. Muir is a good team, but definitely beatable. We just need to limit our turnovers and play aggressively to have a chance. No game is a done deal until its over.

Wayne Robinson Wayne L. Robinson (born January 14, 1930 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is a former professional American football linebacker who played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1952 through 1956. At 6'2", 225-lb.  doesn't always receive some of the recognition he deserves playing at Village Christian, a small private school in Sun Valley. That, however, hasn't prevented the senior from making an impact this season.

The 6-foot-4 post player is shooting 53 percent from the field and averaging 21.2 points, 13.3 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game for the Crusaders heading into Saturday's Alpha League game against rival L.A.Baptist of North Hills.

``When Wayne is putting up numbers, we can compete with anyone,'' Village Christian coach KevinAust said. ``He's our driving force.

``He's versatile. He can handle the ball, rebound and shoot from the inside or outside. We're at our best when he's creating because it opens up things for everyone else, on both ends of the floor.''

That was evident from the firstgame of the season when Robinson finished with 28 points, 21 rebounds and five blocks for the Crusaders (8-9, 0-2) against Crossroads of Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. ``I'm comfortable with being the go-to-guy,'' Robinson said. ``I also understand that I don't need to make plays every time. I trust my teammates. Keeping everyone involved is key.''

His consistency shouldn't come as a big surprise considering he's been a starter for Village Christian since his sophomore season, when he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds. He improved upon those numbers as a junior, averaging 19 points and 13 boards.

``Wayne is coming into his own,'' Aust said.

Robinson has received recruiting interest from several NAIA NAIA
