CRESPI PULLS OUT WIN IN A HEAVENLY GAME : CRESPI 23 CHAMINADE 21.

Byline: Dana Haddad Special to the Daily News

When he found out Friday that plans to attend a fund-raising dinner were canceled, Cardinal Roger Mahony His Eminence Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony (born February 27, 1936) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He currently serves as the fourth Archbishop of Los Angeles, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1991.  of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  archdiocese thought he'd like to attend a high-school football game between two Catholic teams.

When Mahony discovered Crespi and Chaminade were to square off on opening night of the prep season, he took several members of his staff and headed for the Valley.

Mahony couldn't have prayed for a better game. Crespi outlasted host Chaminade 23-21 in a game that started ploddingly plod

in which 34 points were scored in the fourth quarter.

``Two great Catholic school playing . . . unfortunately only one can win,'' said Mahony, who stood on the Crespi sideline in the first half and the Chaminade side for the final 24 minutes. ``There's nothing like high school football. It's the best. No commercials.''

(1-0) led 3-0 at halftime on a 33-yard, second-quarter field goal by Evan Driedger, who had previously missed from 29 and 45 yards. But the Eagles, perhaps inspired by Mahony's presence as they took the field to open the second half, took a 7-3 lead on the first possession.

Quarterback Lyle Everett, who completed 17 of 33 passes for 314 yards and all three touchdowns, capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive by connecting with Nick Lawson on a 17-yard pass play.

Chaminade (0-1), which featured receiver Eric Zdenek (seven catches, 142 yards) gave away its momentum soon after. Two fumbles and a bad snap on a punt gave Crespi great field position. The Celts cashed in on the mistakes. Muller followed with a 4-yard run to boost the lead to 17-7.

With 5:19 left in the contest, Muller passed to Jimmy Guardino for a 14-yard score to seemingly put the game out of reach at 23-7. But Everett, after a 56-yard bomb to Steve Racius, found Chris Canoles on a 34-yard strike. He connected with Canoles again with 26 seconds left to close to 23-21. ``We never give up,'' Everett said, his voice cracking. ``We proved that here tonight.''
