CRESPI HOOP TEAM DIDN'T MIND LEAVING LAS VEGAS.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

Crespi High School basketball coach Dick Dornan took his players sightseeing Saturday night in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. . What he saw was frightening.

``All of a sudden this mad dash of people started running toward us,'' said junior guard Tim McDonough. ``People were screaming to get down and run. We had no idea what was going on.''

Dornan brought the team to the MGM Grand after a two-day basketball camp at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Plenty of worst-case scenarios ran through his mind in the moments after the melee, which resulted in 40 injuries.

``I thought somebody was shooting a gun or at the very least a fight had broke out,'' Dornan said. ``My biggest concern was getting my players out of there as quickly as possible.''

Pat Casella, a junior guard, reacted by diving under a blackjack blackjack, one of the world's most widely played gambling card games; also known as twenty-one or vingt-et-un. ``I wasn't really scared, just a little confused because I still didn't know what was going on,'' said Casella. ``By the time I got up and looked around I didn't see (Dornan). So me and about three other guys started looking for Looking for

Dornan had come back inside the casino to track down the rest of his players. As soon as he gathered the entire team, they raced to their van and drove back to their hotel.

``We figured we'd see some celebrities and take in the whole atmosphere,'' Dornan said.

``It was pretty cool up until then,'' said Casella, a sophomore guard.

Looking back, the Celts feel fortunate that they got away unscathed.

``Things were happening so fast that I really didn't have time to think about what was going on,'' McDonough said. ``The only reason you'd figure people would be running around like that is if somebody was firing a gun. We're lucky that it wasn't as serious as that.''

McDonough said the experience hasn't soured him on Las Vegas.

``This definitely won't prevent me from going back,'' he said.
