If football were based solely on talent, Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  of La Crescenta might never win a Pacific League title. Discovered by Americans in 1859, Midway was annexed in 1867. A cable station was opened in 1903.  through his coaching tenure, Alan Eberhart figured out how to make up for the team's traditional deficiencies. He never had the running back or the line to match with the league's elite.

Finally, he said forget the running back. Forget the running game entirely. Eberhart, in his 10th season, set up an offense with five wide receivers and no one in the backfield.

The spread offense has proved hard to stop as the Falcons have won three consecutive league titles and four of the past five.

Last season, the Falcons won with QB Hudson Gossard and WR Danny Moody mood·y

, who had the best seasons at their positions in school history.

Both graduated, but the Falcons believe the system will enable them to succeed. Their belief was reinforced during summer passing leagues when the new team, led by senior QB Aaron McGuiness, beat Hart of Newhall.

``I've been behind Hudson for three years playing other positions,'' said McGuiness, an all-league safety last year. ``I've had a chance to learn from him. It will be pretty easy for me to take over.''

Replacing Moody as the team's top wideout is Nigel Orosco, a soccer transplant transplant

who hadn't played football until the summer. Eberhart calls Orosco (6-foot-1, 165 pounds) the school's best athlete.

Amond Esmaili, one of the league's top running backs last year with Hoover of Glendale, moved and was forced to transfer to Crescenta Valley. But because the Falcons don't use a running back, Eberhart said Esmaili will play defensive back.

For the past decade, Crescenta Valley, Arcadia and Muir have battled for the league title. This year will be no different.

Arcadia has the edge entering the season because it returns the best quarterback in the league in Brian Ziska (6-4, 215). Arcadia also has linebacker Samson Jagoras, who was named co-defensive player of the year in the league last season with 10 sacks from the defensive end position.

The league will sort out early. Crescenta Valley and Muir play in the opening week of league play. Then, Muir and Arcadia meet in the second week.

Glendale and Hoover have struggled recently. But Glendale could improve with players added from a 10-0 junior varsity team For the American rock band, see .

and returning QB Joe Hanna (872 yards) and RB Vladimir Paniouchkine (717 yards, 11 TDs).

Hoover, already the worst team in the league with an 0-9-1 record last season, was hit hard by the loss of Esmaili. But the team does return quarterback Sal Rangle, who last season had the team's best passing performance in about a decade.

Hoover will battle for fifth place with Pasadena, which is going through its second coaching change in as many years.
