Still not particularly alarmed, you promise yourself to be more organized in the future. As for that second, unpaid bill, well, it was the creditor's fault for not sending a second notice - or at least, not one that you ever found in your piles of mail.

These incidents can make their way to your credit report, resulting in bad credit that can harm your ability to finance a new car, obtain loans, or cause you other problems that you'd be smart to avoid.

in your payment, the number of times you didn't pay your bill and the severity of the incidents - that is, was it just one or two nonpayments, or did the creditor have to write it off as a bad debt?

Here's what to do:

Bring your payments up to date and keep them current.

Make sure all subsequent payments arrive on time, which should counter the list of late payments on your record.

After about two years of maintaining that record of on-time payments, order a copy of your credit report and discuss it with creditors who might look kindly on the new, improved fiscal you and ignore the previous negative information.

In general, stay away from ``credit repair clinics,'' which can charge up to $1,000 for services that you can do for yourself for free, and which have been known to engage in practices that might not be entirely legal.

Meanwhile, here are some things you can do to establish a positive credit history and to minimize your problems if financial difficulties force you to fall behind in your payments:

Print clearly when applying for credit and always use your complete name, which minimizes the chances of your file getting mixed up with someone else's.

Again, pay your bills on time.

Review your credit report two to three months before making a major purchase and immediately notify the reporting service about any potentially harmful inaccuracies. Information that is proved inaccurate or that cannot be verified as accurate with the source will be removed from your record.

If you fall behind in your payments, notify the lender who could be willing to alter your payment schedule or interest rate.

 into one manageable account.

Don't use any more credit until you've got your finances under control. Do not cut up all your credit cards, because doing so won't help you establish a good record. Instead, keep one or two accounts open - and use them wisely.

FRAUD ALERT

One way that your credit can suffer is if you're a victim of credit card fraud Credit card fraud is a wide-ranging term for theft and fraud committed using a credit card or any similar payment mechanism as a fraudulent source of funds in a transaction. The purpose may be to obtain goods without paying, or to obtain unauthorized funds from an account. . Though proven cases of fraud will be removed from your record, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself from it happening in the first place:

Immediately sign your credit card when it arrives.

Store your cards in a secure place.

Shred everything that bears your account number before throwing it away.

Never give out your credit card number to anyone over the telephone, unless you have initiated the call.

Never write your credit card account number on a postcard or the outside of an envelope.

After picking up your credit card and receipt following a transaction, double-check the names and numbers to make sure they're yours rather than those of the person who was ahead of you in line.

Notify your card issuers immediately if you find an error on your bill or your card is lost or stolen.

Call the card issuer immediately if you have not received your billing statement.

Obtain a copy of your credit report and review it every few years to ensure that no one has applied for credit under your name or used your account without your knowledge, or to detect any other evidence of credit-dinging fraud.
