CREATIVELY MARKING TIME : KENNEDY HIGH GRADUATE BUILDS GRANDFATHER CLOCK.Byline: Virginia Gonzalez Sometimes results of a school assignment are worth keeping. How about an 8-foot-high oak grandfather clock? That's what recent Kennedy High School graduate Roy Kay Robert "Roy" Kay (born October 24, 1949 in Edinburgh, Scotland) is a retired Scottish footballer who played in Defence. built as one of his projects in an industrial-technology class. Kay spent much of his senior year building the clock, which instructor Robert Hazard Robert Hazard is a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, musician, probably best known for composing the Cyndi Lauper hit "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." Hazard, an instructor at the Granada Hills school for 12 years, called Kay's clock grand by any standard. The clock towers over the teen-ager who built it. It is made of oak and has a brass pendulum with three weights and six long, thin chimes that ring every 15 minutes. Hazard said Kay worked on the clock during class and even attended evening shop classes while also managing to turn in other excellent projects. ``He has always liked to push himself a little further - has always been in for a challenge - which just amazed me,'' said Hazard. Students take industrial-technology classes - the type that used to be called wood shop classes - for tangible achievement, Hazard said, and in the process are likely to improve more than craft skills. Reading, writing, calculating, planning and decision making are all part of the process, Hazard said. Kay, an 18-year-old Granada Hills resident, said his teacher's constant support and expertise helped him complete ambitious class projects. ``This kind of a project allows me to work with my hands - which I like - and I can be proud of the accomplishment because it's something I can see,'' Kay said. Kay discovered his clock is worth cash as well as praise on a report card. A school employee offered him $3,500 for it. He turned the money down.
