, 36, who has worked out of the LAPD's Devonshire Division for one year, said the annual Swing-A-Thon he started five years ago gets children to interact with officers and realize that the police are on their side.

``Most of the time, when they see that police helicopter flying over their community, they're very scared of that thing,'' Scott said.

About 2,000 children attended the most recent Swing-A-Thon, which was held July 24 at El Cariso County Park in Sylmar. Scott also coordinates an annual LAPD-sponsored Christmas drive that has raised thousands of dollars to provide toys for children from low-income households.

Others honored Sunday were Detective Jose Marcos Espinoza and Officers Ronnie Daniels and Jimmie Barlow, all of the LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

Espinoza mentors and tutors students. Five years ago, he established a scholarship fund that helps formerly homeless students. He also delivers food to the homeless.

Daniels and Barlow are both in the mounted platoon. In June, they used City of Hope vouchers collected by members of their platoon who donated blood to take 10 needy children to Knotts Berry Farm. The children had never been to an amusement park amusement park, a commercially operated park offering various forms of entertainment, such as arcade games, carousels, roller coasters, and performers, as well as food, drink, and souvenirs. .

``Just seeing their faces when they walked in and saw the rides and the different animals walking around, it was really neat,'' Barlow said.

Zine called the four award recipients the ``cream of the crop.''

``It's really a proud day to see them honored and recognized,'' he said.

Officers from the LAPD's SWAT, hazardous materials, mounted police and dive teams chatted with those at the brunch, as did police dog handlers. Children climbed inside a police helicopter. Others, including Joe and Terry Ares of Northridge, paused in front of a 1929 Model-A Ford of the kind once used by the LAPD.

``I love it,'' said Ares, a deputy director of corporate security for Washington Mutual, one of the companies supporting the Los Angeles Police Foundation. ``Of course, I would put a 357 engine in there, soup it up a little.''

The foundation has given more than $3 million in grants to the LAPD since it was created in 1998 under former Police Chief Bernard Parks.
